Film evaporators; separate heater and evaporator apparatus; film evaporators; hydrocarbons, distilling. -- Apparatus for evaporating, distilling or fractionating hydrocarbons &c. comprises a vessel, Fig. 4, divided into three compartments a, b, c separated by tubeplates d, e, spaced slightly apart, and by a tube-plate f, t h e arrangement being such that the oil entering the compartment c by a pipe 9 flows upwards through tubes gin the heating compartment b and through tubes h projecting into the compartment a. The oil flows down the outer walls of the tubes a in the form of a film. The vapours escape by a pipe 14, and the remaining liquid flows by a pipe 10 to the next vessel in the series. The compartment a is fitted with an overflow 32. A plant for fractionating petroleum comprises a series of preheaters of this construction, in which the lighter constituents of the oil are distilled off. The topped oil flows through a series of ordinary oil stills. The vapours generated in the stills are used as heading-media in the pre-heaters. The vapours generated in the preheaters, together with those from the stills which escape condensation in the preheaters, are led to appropriate sections of a fractional condensation plant which consists of a series of vessels, similar to those shown in Fig. 4, together with intermediate condensing pipes.
