Abstract
<PICT:0408117/III/1> Higher fatty acids, e.g. oleic, stearic acids &c. are distilled from stock containing them, e.g. palm oil or greases split by the Twitchel process by passing the stock while warm through a line 1, condenser 2, heater 4, and line 5 into a pool of acid on the upper plate 7<a> of a vacuum tower 6 heated by superheated steam supplied from a heater 14 through a pipe 15. The plates 7 are maintained covered by pools of fatty acid so that the stock flows downwardly through pools of fatty acid successively higher in temperature and lower in fatty acid content. The vaporized fatty acids pass off through a line 10 and the condenser 2 to a separator 28 where part of the vapours are condensed by water sprayed through a pipe 27 and separated, while the residual vapours are condensed in a condenser 43 and collected in a receiver 32. Residual stock is removed to a pitch pot 13. The condensates from the receivers 28, 32 are drawn off through lines 29, 35 by a pump 37. The stock is preheated to 250--400 DEG F. in the condenser 2, and to 440--500 DEG F. in the heater 4 while the still 6 is maintained at 590--660 DEG F. under a vacuum of 20--24 inches.
