Abstract
Fatty acids are distilled from acid stock by forcing the latter in a restricted stream through a coil 7 heater to 400--600 DEG F. and expanding the products through valved pipes 13, 14, 15 into a vacuum tower 16 wherein they are heated to 375--550 DEG F. by steam from a coil 24 flowing in counter current thereto. Residual liquid is <PICT:0406184/III/1> continuously removed through a pipe 23 to the lower part of the tower and thence through a pipe 28 into a container 29. The vapours pass off at the top of the tower and condense in a cooler 27, the condensate being stored in receivers 33, 34 used alternately. A pressure of 20--60 lbs. per sq. inch is maintained in the coil 6 while the vacuum in the tower is maintained below 22 inches. Iron and its alloys are avoided in the construction of the apparatus which is preferably constructed of copper, nickel, or nickel alloys. Baffles 20 are arranged in the tower so that the vapours pass alternately centrally through and around the baffles.
