Abstract

<PICT:0457624/III/1> Fatty acids are purified and distilled by heating the impure material in a heat exchanger 9 under sufficient pressure to maintain it liquid, the liquid being then introduced into a vacuum chamber 1 in which the fatty acids are vaporized substantially instantaneously without additional heat imparted thereto, the vapours being then drawn off and condensed. The escaping vapours first pass through a steam generator 6 the liquefied acid running off into tank 8 and the remaining vapours passing through outlet 7 to a low temperature condenser and a vacuum pump. The heating medium for the exchanger 9 is supplied from a furnace heated liquid heater 10. The steam from generator 6 is superheated in coil 11 and then admitted to chamber 1. Fresh steam may be admitted through connection 26 and surplus steam is drawn off through connection 27. Specification 408,117 is referred to.
