Abstract
<PICT:0802715/III/1> In a liquid boiler for evaporation and distillation plants the liquid flows continuously through two nests of tubes arranged within a casing having an inlet and outlet for a continuously flowing heating medium. The tubes are all of substantially the same length and parallel to one another. The upstream nest of two or more tubes are connected in series and the downstream nest in parallel, the arrangement being such that the liquid commences to boil at or about the region of communication between the two nests of tubes. A cylindrical boiler 1 has partitions 3 and 4 at the top and bottom, between which the tubes extend. Heating medium is introduced through inlet 8 and is guided over the external surfaces of the tubes by partition 6, vertical guide tube 7 and baffleplates 10 to the outlet 9. The liquid to be boiled enters through inlet 16 and flows through tubes a1, a2, a3, a4 arranged in series and connected by short horizontal tubes 11 above partition 3, the last of these tubes terminating in distribution chamber 12, in or at which the liquid starts to boil and increase in volume. The boiling liquid then passes into a second nest of parallel tubes, b, each consisting of a riser part, b1, from chamber 12, which is joined by a short horizontal tube 13 to a downcomer part b2, which terminates in collection chamber 14. The liquid passes from chamber 14 through outlet 15 to a vapour separator (not shown) from which the liquid may be recycled to 16. The distribution of the tubes may be varied and the partition 6 and the guide tube 7 may be dispensed with. The short horizontal tubes 11 and 13 may be replaced by channels in a tight fitting lid. The apparatus may be used for the evaporation of milk or the distillation of sea water.
