Abstract

In an evaporator comprising several shallow trays 4 disposed vertically above each other in a shell 6 with vertical heating tubes 2 extending through all the trays, the joints between the tubes and the bottoms of the trays are made fluid-tight, and staggered overflow weirs 5 are provided for feeding the liquid from one tray to another. A cover 9 is bolted to the under surface of tube sheet 1 and this has a horizontal partition 10 which serves as tube sheet for a series of tubes 11 of smaller diameter than tubes 2, and extending therethrough; the tubes 11 serve to feed heating medium, introduced through port 12, to the tubes 2, which are closed at their upper ends by removable plugs 3. The liquid to be evaporated is fed through line 8 and vapours are <PICT:0588214/III/1> withdrawn through outlet 7. The evaporator is primarily intended for the production of pure water for boiler feed purposes.
