Abstract

<PICT:0471841/III/1> In a continuous crystallizer operated by evaporation or cooling comprising a receptacle with heat exchanging elements therein, the elements are arranged so that the heat exchanging surface per volume-unit of the mass under treatment decreases towards the discharge end of the apparatus. A hollow rotatable tubular shaft 2 mounted within a trough 1, is provided with hollow sector-shaped plates 7 to which cooling or heating fluid is supplied by a pipe 8 and flows from one to another through connecting pipes 9 located within the shaft. The solution under treatment, such as massecuite is supplied to the opposite end of the trough through pipe 11 and is discharged at the overflow 13. At this end of the trough, the spacing of the plates is widest. The plates may be provided with internal baffles 14 to give a zigzag path to the cooling or heating fluid and the shaft with a screw blade 15 to facilitate movement of the mass through the receptacle. A smaller cooling or heating surface at the discharge end of the trough may also be obtained by decreasing the area of the plates, then arranged with equal spacing. The receptacle is provided with an air-tight closure when used as a vacuum pan.
