570,642. Cooling liquids. ENOCK, A. GRAHAM-LONGVILLE, H. W., and GRAHAMENOCK MANUFACTURING CO., Ltd. Jan. 5, 1944, No. 194. [Classes 29 and 64 (iii)] In milk or other liquid cooling apparatus in which the liquid to be cooled flows by gravity as a film over substantially horizontal pipes 1 arranged one above another and connected at their ends to common inlet and outlet headers 2, 3, a liquid refrigerating medium being circulated through the pipes and headers, means are provided preventing or tending to prevent the escape of vaporised refrigerant from the pipes into the inlet header, so that circulation of the refrigerant is induced from the inlet to the outlet header. In one form, Fig. 1, each end of each tube is closed by a baffle 5 or 7, the openings 6, 8 left by the baffles being respectively at the lower and upper parts of the tubes. Vapour will be prevented by the baffles 5 from escaping from the tubes into the header 2, but will be able to escape into the header 3. The two headers are connected to a drum 4 in which the liquid level is controlled, e.g. by a float valve. In another form, Fig. 4, the outlet end of each tube is closed by an inclined plate 10, and an outlet aperture 9 is provided.
