Abstract

643,190. Refrigerating. MOJONNIER, H. G. Feb. 20, 1948, No. 5143. Convention date, May 22, 1946. [Class 29] An evaporator for refrigerating apparatus comprises a tank 42 within which is arranged a tube 52 spaced from the walls of the tank to form an annular refrigerant reservoir 56, and a plurality of inner tubes 66 within the tube 52, for the liquid to be cooled, e.g. carbonated beverages, the space within the tube 52 being in communication with the reservoir 56, in which the refrigerant is maintained in part in its liquid phase and in part in its vapour phase. The inner shell 44 of the tank is secured to tube sheets 48, 50 between which the cooling tubes 66 are mounted and to which are fixed dome-shaped headers 72, 82 for supply and discharge of the fluid to be cooled. Surrounding the bank of tubes 66 is large tube 52 with a bottom flange 54 secured to the shell 42 to divide it into upper and lower spaces 56, 58 At its upper end the large tube 52 has a segmental flange 60 welded to the shell 44 and having fins 64 extending downwardly. Refrigerant supplied to the space 58 by an injector 106 as described in Specification 606,398 causes a circulation of refrigerant liquid up the tube 52 and down the space 56. Vaporized refrigerant is removed through a pipe 36 the flange 60 acting as a baffle to prevent escape of liquid refrigerant. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also modifications in which the liquid to be cooled is circulated in a number of passes, and a series of outer tubes each surround a plurality of inner tubes 66. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
