Description

y 1949. H. RAINWATER I 2,475,639
SPRAY EVAPORATOR WITH DOME CONDENSER Filed July 5, 1944 'famlu'liil UNITED STATE Patented July 12, 1949 SPRAY EVAPORATOR wrrH DOME CONDENSER Harold Rainwater, Dayton, Wash. 1 Application July 5, 1944, Serial No. 543,569
The present invention such liquids as milk and food juices and has for the primary object to provide a device of this character comprising aunique construction and arrangement for atomizing and heating the 2 Claims. (c 202 -191) relates to new and useiul improvements in evaporators particularly for will be readily apparent "cm a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly, the liquid under high liquid, and for condensing the vapors which rise I therefrom.
Other objects of the inventionare to provide an evaporator of the aforementioned character which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, highly efllcient and reliable in operation, compact and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, wherein the figure is a vertical sectional view through an evaporator constructed in accordance with the present invention.
pressure from the pump I5 is heated by the preheater l6 as it flows through the supply pipe M to the horizontally perforated injection pipe 13. The warm vapor from; the atomized liquid from the injection 'pipe [3 partly rises to condense on the cold walls of the dome 3 and gravitates to the trough 5, from which it is taken off through the pipe 2| by the ejector pump 20. Some of the atomized liquid from the pipe l3 strikes the heated walls I of the heater 6 where a portionof it vaporizes and rises to condense on the walls of the dome 3. The thicker or uncondcnsed liquid from the pipe l3 gravitates to the bottom of the heater 7 where it is taken off through the pipe I! by the pump [8 and cooled by the jacket l9. Part of Referringnow to the drawing in detail, it will be; seen that the embodiment of the apparatus which has been illustrated comprises an insulated cylindrical tank or container l for the reception of a cooling fluid 2, said container including a removable cover 25. Suitable inlet and outlet pipes 23and 24, respectively, are connected to the container I.
Mounted in the container I in spaced, concentric relation to the walls thereof is a dome 13. A vacuum pump 4 is connected to the top of "the dome 3. On the lower portion of the dome 3 and on the inside thereof is an annular trough 5.
Mounted below the dome 3 is a heater 6. AI
sealing and heat insulating gasket 26 is provided between the container I and the heater 8. The
heater 6 includes spaced inner and outer walls 1 and 8, respectively, providing a chamber 3 ,therebetween for the reception and circulation of .a heating fluid. The heater 6 further includes a flat bottom plate Ill. Fluid inlet and outlet pipes II and 12, respectively, communicate with the jacket or chamber 9. l l
, Mounted vertically in the heater 6 is a perforated injection pipe l3. A supply pipe ll from a high pressure injection pump I5 is connected to the pipe IS. The supply a cooling jacket 19. An ejector pump 20 is connected by a pipe 2| to the trough 5 to remove the vapor condensed to aliquid. It is believed that the operation or the device the atomized liquid from the injection pipe l3 strikes the hot inner wall I of the heater 6 and gravitates to the bottom of said hopper where it is taken off through the pipe I! and the pump I8. Vapors which rise from the liquid contact the dome 3 and are condensed thereon. The condensate runs down the walls of the dome 3 into the trough 5 where it is taken off through the pipe 2| and the pump 20. The outer wall 8 of the heater 6 is insulated, as at 22.
For the. purpose of this specification and claims,
the words and expressions: pipe, tube, tubular," tubular member are deemed to be synonyms. n It is to be noted that my novel evaporator produces two principal products. One of them is collected in the trough 5 while the other is taken from the bottom of the heater 6 and cooled by the cooler associated with pipe l1.
It is believed thatthe many advantages of an evaporator constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood and although a preferred embodiment of the device is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction, and
in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
, 1. An evaporator comprising a heat-insulated tank for holding a liquid coolant and having inlet and outlet means, a dome having its top closed and its bottom open and arranged in the tank, a trough within the open bottom of the dome, a downwardly tapered heater shell having an upper open end disposed inwardly of and adjacent to the trough, a jacket for the heater shell for receiving a heating fluid, a vertical injector pipe through the bottom of the heater shell and having its top terminating near the elevation of the top' of the heater shell, said pipe having apertures which spray a liquid feed horizontally upon the inner face of the heater shell throughout substantially the entire vertical dimension of such face, means to preheat the liquid feed and supply it under pressure to the vertical pipe,
means including a pipe to withdraw the liquid feed from the bottom of the heater shell, and means to withdraw the condensate from the trough including a pipe, and a suction device including a pipe connected with the top of the dome.
2, An evaporator comprising a heat-insulated tank for holding a liquid coolant and having inlet and outlet means, a dome having its top closed and its bottom open and arranged in the tank, a
suction device including a pipe connected with the closed top of the dome, a trough within the 20 open bottom of the dome, a heater shell having an upper open end disposed inwardly of and ad- ,jacent to the trough, a Jacket for the heater shell for receiving a heating fluid,a vertical injector pipe passing through the bottom 01' the heater 25 shell and having its top terminating near the elevation of the top of the heater shell, said pipe having apertures which spra a liquid horizontally upon the innerface of the heater shell throughout substantially the entire vertical dimension of such face, means connected with the vertical pipe to supply the liquid feed under pressure to the vertical pipe, and pump means to withdraw the liquid feed from the bottom of the heater shell and the condensate from the trough.
