Abstract

691,830. Heating by circulation of liquids. PIERCE FOUNDATION, J. B. April 27, 1951 [May 31, 1950], No. 9948/51. Class 64(ii) In a heating system in which a pump 7 or 27 or other means circulates a heat-transfer liquid, which releases substances of low boiling point, through a boiler and apparatus 5 to be heated, and storage means 2 receives liquid from and returns it to the remainder of the circulating system, means 6 are provided for separating vapour from the liquid preparatory to condensing it and returning it to the system. In the system shown in Fig. 1, the vapour passes from the separator 6 to the storage tank 2, in which it is condensed by contact with liquid and by a cooling element 3. The vapour separator comprises a chamber having a liquid inlet 17 and outlet 18 which are arranged in radial or tangential directions. The vapour outlet pipe 19 may project below the top of the chamber so that sufficient vapour must collect in the top of the latter to depress the liquid below the end of the pipe before the vapour can escape. The vapour separator 6 is located adjacent to the inlet of the pump 7, where pressure is lowest. The pump and vapour separator may be in the pipe line 21. Superatmospheric pressure may be applied to the surface of the liquid in the storage tank 2. In the system shown in Fig. 4, vapour from the separator 2 is condensed in a condenser 25, and the condensate returns to the circulating system through an injector 24. A tank 29 and pumps 30, 31 enable the heat-transfer liquid to be drained from the circulating system or to have other liquids mixed with it.
