Abstract

<PICT:0448912/III/1> An evaporator, particularly for making fresh water from brine, comprises an outer casing 1, having at its upper end steam &c. inlet and outlet ducts 2, 20 communicating with corresponding ducts 12, 18 in the flange 5 of a heating-unit 4 removably supported in the casing, and a vapourcollecting chamber 21 having a cylindrical baffle 22 and a vapour outlet pipe 26 connected to a liquid-trap 25. The heating-unit comprises a casing provided with tube - plates in which are secured flooded brine tubes 10 around which the steam flows to one or more exhaust tubes 14 having perforations at their lower ends. The upper tubeplate of the unit is secured to the flange 5 and is accessible through an opening in the cover of the chamber 21. A constant brine level is maintained in the chamber through a float-operated valve housed in a vessel connected to the liquid and vapour spaces of the chamber.
