Abstract

<PICT:0379051/III/1> <PICT:0379051/III/2> In order to prevent loss from a tank, Fig. I, containing a readily-vaporizable liquid the gas in the space 4 is withdrawn through a pipe 7 passed to a cooler 6 positioned externally of the tank and returned by a pipe 11, the pipes 7, 11 being spaced apart and both disposed above the liquid level 3. The cooler 6 may comprise a chamber provided with cross pipes 22, 24 and surrounded by a jacket 14 to which water is supplied by a pipe 15 having an outlet which is directed tangentially with respect to the inner chamber; the water overflows from an outlet 16 to the outside of the jacket which is provided with gutters 20 and a cloth 21, and the supply is regulated by a valve 17 operated by the movement of a gasometer 8 to which the condensed liquid and cooled vapour pass by means of a pipe 9 having a water-sealed sliding joint 10. The end 13 of the vapour pipe 11 extends above the bottom of the gasometer from which condensed liquid is conducted to the bottom of the tank 2 by a pipe 12. A manually-operated adjustment valve 25, "breather" valves 26, 27, and one or more one-way valves 28 are also provided. The condenser may be provided with an additional metal sleeve 29, Fig. II, the cloth 21 and all except the lower gutter being dispensed with; air is circulated between the sleeve 29 and jacket 14 by means of a fan 31 which may be driven by a Pelton wheel 32 rotated by the overflow from the vessel 14. The gasometer may be omitted in cases where the tank is capable of automatic volumetric variation or where its use is impracticable; in the latter case a circulating fan may be arranged in the pipe 7.
