Abstract

<PICT:0390066/III/1> In the concentration of dilute nitric acid by passing the nitric acid vaporized in a heater E into a column C down which concentrated sulphuric acid supplied by a pipe D trickles, the concentrated vapours passing off at the top of the column and being condensed in a cooler F, the excess heat developed is recovered by leading off the diluted acid from the bottom of the column into a separator S where water is removed by evaporation under vacuum produced by a pump A. The concentrated acid passes to a receiver B from which it is recirculated to the column C by a pump P<2> the flow of acid being controlled by a thermostat and actuating a valve V. A float R controls the supply of liquid to the separator S in accordance with the level of the liquid in the column C.
