Abstract

<PICT:0707887/III/1> <PICT:0707887/III/2> A distilling-apparatus, particularly for brine, comprises an evaporating chamber 1, 2 with superposed banks of tubular steam heaters 9, 10, 11, 12, a blow-down pipe 33 for the discharge of concentrated liquid communicating with a float chamber 47, a calibrated discharge opening 49 from the float chamber and a link connection 55, 56, 57 from the float to the feed liquid valve 58 so arranged that when the level of liquid in the float chamber rises, due to a decreased distillation rate, the rate of feed is reduced and vice versa. This control tends to keep the specific gravity of the liquid being distilled constant. The feed passes initially through a preheater 4 in the condensing chamber 3 of the apparatus. A condenser 5 is also located in the chamber 3 and a catchall 43 is provided below the condenser and preheater to collect condensate. The steam coils 9-12 are arranged on either side of a pair of partitions 7, 8 forming a central channel or downcomer, the liquid being distilled circulating down this channel and up through the steam coils. A deflector 40 prevents the liquid discharging directly into the blow-down pipe 33. Deflectors 38, 39 guide the circulating liquid into the central channel.
