Abstract
1,114,513. Cooling electron discharge tubes. ENGLISH ELECTRIC VALVE CO. Ltd. 2 Nov., 1966 [24 Nov., 1965], No. 50004/65. Heading F4U. A cooling system for an electron discharge tube comprises a boiler 1 in which part of the tube is immersed and in which a constant liquid level 17 is maintained by causing excess coolant to by-pass the boiler. Heating of the excess coolant is thus avoided. As shown in Fig. 3 the coolant supply pipe 14 has two branches 15 and 16, the former supplying the boiler and the latter extending upwardly into a vessel 18 which is open to atmosphere through an aperture 20 and has an outlet 19. The level of the top of branch 16 thus defines the liquid level 17 in the boiler. The vapour outlet 21 of the boiler communicates with a condenser 4, Fig. 4, condensate from which mixes with liquid from outlet 19 flowing through finned pipes 23 to a reservoir 2. A pump 3 supplies liquid from the reservoir to pipe 14 via a jacket 6 surrounding a further part of the discharge tube. In a modification (Fig. 5, not shown), pipe 14 discharges into the bottom of the vessel 18 which is connected to the boiler and contains a weir defining the boiler liquid level.
