Abstract
846,754. Heating and cooling liquids in bulk. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. June 24, 1958 [June 24, 1957], No. 19902/57. Class 64(3) A liquid container 2 is divided into upper and lower compartments 6, 7 by a partition 5 in which is arranged a tubular member 8 constituting a passage interconnecting the two compartments and containing a heat exchanger comprising a nest of tubes 11 through which a first liquid passes in flowing from one compartment to the other, the tubes 11 and a surrounding shell 12 all extending between two tube plates 13, 14, a second liquid being caused to flow around the heat exchanger tubes in a direction countercurrent to the first liquid. In the form shown the second liquid flows downwardly through a tube 15 to enter the heat exchanger at a point adjacent the lower tube plate 14 whereafter it flows upwardly over the tubes 11 and through tubes 16 to a header 34 having an outlet duct 35. Closed end elements 43 shaped as shown and disposed in alignment with the tubes 16 are said to minimize streaming of the liquid entering these tubes. In an alternative arrangement the open lower end of the tube 15 may be located in the tube plate 13 and the tubes 16 extended to open in the region of the tube plate 14. In this arrangement the duct 35 is the inlet for the second fluid and the tube 15 becomes an outlet tube; a member similar to members 43 would then be provided immediately below the open end of the tube 15. The invention s particularly applied in anuclear reactor heat transfer system, the first liquid then comprising primary active sodium and the second liquid comprising secondary inactive sodium. The tank compartment 6 normally contains the primary active sodium at the level 50 so that the heat exchanger is wholly submerged. The compartment 7 contains cooled primary active liquid sodium which has been caused by pumps (not shown) located in compartment 7 to flow from compartment 6 and through the heat exchanger as indicated by arrows 51, 52, 56, 57 to compartment 7. The heat exchanger hangs from the pipes 15, 16 and hence is free to move axially within the pipe 8 to allow for heat expansion. It may when required be removed together with the cover plate 31 at the upper end of the tube 8.
