Abstract
1316375 Tubular heat exchangers E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 13 Aug 1971 [14 Aug 1970] 38096/71 Heading F4S In a heat exchanger comprising a plurality of hairpin-shaped tube bundles 10 arranged side-by-side to form an annular heat exchange region 9 disposed between the wall of a tank 1 and an ogive-shaped distributer element 6, liquid, e.g. hot sulphuric acid, entering a distribution chamber 21 via an inlet 7 flows across the heat exchanger region 9 and is cooled before being collected in a chamber 22 from whence it overflows across a rim or weir 2 into a surrounding hold up or pump tank 3. Each bundle contains a plurality of small diameter flexible tubes of a fluorocarbon organic polymeric material braided together. Coolant is supplied to the tubes by way of inlet and outlet headers 11 and 12 to which the bundles 10 are attached by means of flange caps 13, and 0-ring gaskets 14. Individual shut-off valves 23 are provided to stop coolant flow to a particular bundle in the event of leakage occurring due to tube failure. An anchor ring (16, see Fig. 2) containing lead shot (17) may be placed within the bend portion of the bundles to maintain the bundles compact and straight; spacers (18) and frames (20) secured to the bundles by deformable ties (19) are also provided. Any entrained particles present in the incoming liquid separate out and are collected in a particle trap in the form of a narrow annular channel 5 at the base of the tank 1. The tube bundles may alternatively comprise straight tubes extending between inlet and outlet headers at opposite ends of the bundle.
