Abstract

1,101,773. Tubular heat exchangers; steam superheaters. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. 24 May, 1965 [25 May, 1964], No. 21554/64. Headings F4A and F4S. A heat exchanger comprises straight parallel tube lengths 3 with their axes lying in a plurality of concentric, circular or circularly arcuate rows together constituting an inner and outer group of rows (in the spaces 4, 5 respectively. Each tube length of one group is a limb of a U-tube of which the other limb is a tube length of the other group. In each group the spacings between adjacent axes in any one row are uniform and any one axis in each row is equidistant from two axes that are adjacent each other in the or either next row, the distance P between an axis in any row and each of the two axes in the or either next row from which said axis is equidistant being equal for all adjacent rows. In a modification, the dimension P need not be applicable tothe innermost row of tubes in the space 4. As shown, the angle B between two adjacent radial rows of the inner group is twice that of the angle B/2 between adjacent radial rows of the outer group; and the U-tubes with one limb forming a radial row in the inner group have their respective other limbs forming two adjacent rows of the outer group. The invention is particularly applicable to a steam superheater such as described in Specification 1,101,772.
