Abstract

In an evaporator, particularly for distilling sea-water, comprising a boiler 1, a constant level chamber 2, and a condenser 3, which receives steam from the constant level chamber, the bottom of which is connected with the bottom of the boiler by a pipe 28 while the top of the boiler is connected through a restricted passage with the top of the constant level chamber, the boiler is disposed below the constant level chamber and the restricted passage, formed by pipe 38 and valve 39, <PICT:0600784/III/1> causes water in the boiler to back up into the constant level chamber when the quantity of water entrained in the steam increases. Sea-water circulates through pipe 51, chamber 49a and pipe 53 to condense steam in the spiral 47 leading to the distillate outlet 48 and to make up the water level in the chamber by passing down the tube 56, the exit of which is controlled by the float - operated valve 57. Steam, with entrained water, passes from the boiler tube 8, which is heated by internal - combustion exhaust gases circulated through the annular baffled space 12, into the separating chamber 27 having a lead-out pipe 33 through which the steam and entrained water pass. The steam with some entrained water enters the upper chamber 24 through the branch pipe 38 joined to the pipe 40, which is tangential to the wall of the chamber, the entrained water being deposited on the wall. The water not entrained in the pipe 38 is returned to the bottom of the boiler by the water gauge 35. A short pipe 30 forms an annular downtake in the tube 8 for recirculation of the water in the boiler.
