[Class 55 (ii)] Gas cleaning apparatus comprises a container 2 with gas inlet 3 and outlet 7 on opposite sides of a partition 6 and an inner circumferential skirt 9 spaced from the wall and leading to an upper part of the container, a sleeve 11 rising within the lower part of the skirt forming a gas and liquid mixing space open at both bottom and top. Incoming gas is caused to whirl by baffles in space 10 and sets the body of liquid L in motion, depressing the level until it escapes under the serrated edge of the skirt 9 and between mixing blades 18. The whirling mixture rises into an expansion space 8 against the skirt wall, gas separating from liquid and passing with reduced velocity into an exit chamber 28 in which any liquid carried over separates on a ring 26 and plates 26" depending from an opening 27 opposite the outlet. In a modified embodiment the skirt is cylindrical and not serrated at its lower edge ; and the inner sleeve only extends to the top of the mixing blades; a tangentially bladed mist extractor 'is disposed at the outlet from the skirt. Apparatus in which selected vapours are condensed from the gas and the body of liquid is maintained at constant volume and temperature includes close-ended cooling tubes 35 with inner tubes 37 upstanding respectively from headers 39, 40 and supplied'with cooling water through a pipe 41 under control of a thermostatic valve 48. Condensate is discharged through an overflow 32.
