Abstract

555,227. Water stills. KEENAN, G., and MULHERN, J. A. March 6, 1942, No. 2938. [Class 32] A portable still particularly for use in lifeboats &c. comprises a cylindrical vertical boiler 1 having a central conical firebox and combustion chamber 6 surrounded by an annular water space formed between the walls 1, 6 and a condenser 19, 21 supported on the boiler cover 7 by a pipe 18a which provides an offtake for the vapours formed. The pipe 18a leads to the vapour tube 21 of the condenser from which condensate is drawn off through a filter 23 and water seal 24. The tube 21 is cooled by water flowing through the annular space formed between the tube 21 and outer tube 19. The water normally flows through pipe 28 to a 3- way cock Fig. 4 and thence through line 25a to the lower inlet 25 of the condenser but can be diverted in part to flow through 27a as make up feed for the boiler. A perforated spray arrester 14 is provided round the upper part of the conical wall 6 and a sight glass 31 to show the waterlevel. Paper, wood &c. for combustion is fed through a funnel 14a and holes 39 are provided for admission of air. Alternatively an oil burner or the like may be attached to the base. The condenser annulus may be provided with a special baffle.
