Abstract

<PICT:0828664/III/1> A condensation system suitable for use with reaction vessels for the manufacture of alkyd resins comprises a separator adapted for attachment to the top of the reaction vessel and having a bottom outlet for liquid, a vertical reflux condenser fitted to the upper end of the separator, a large diameter vapour inlet pipe extending upwardly into the separator from its lower end and adapted also to serve as an overflow return pipe for solvent in the separator and a hood situated above the top of the pipe which prevents the direct passage into the pipe of reflux liquid from the condenser. In a preferred embodiment the system comprises a separator 1, fixed to the top of a reaction vessel 3 and a vertical reflux condenser 4. Vapours leave the reactor vessel through a pipe 5 of 8-12 inches diameter, through the space between the upper end of the pipe and a tray 6 and into the lower ends of the tubes 7 of the condensers. The separator has a bottom outlet 8 for water, a side sight glass 9 and a cleaning hole 10. The condenser has a cooling water inlet 11 and a cooling water outlet 12. When the apparatus is used for the manufacture of alkyd resins by the fusion process a chamber 16, fitted with a vacuum branch 17, a meter feed inlet 18 and a perforated distributor plate 19 is provided at the top of the condenser.
