Abstract
<PICT:0933281/III/1> The vapours withdrawn from the vapour-space 3 of a fractionating column are led into a condenser 4, the condensate flows down pipe 6 into vessel 7, from which it is continuously pumped up pipe 10 into a liquid-receiver 11 in the top of the column; and part of the condensate in this receiver flows down capillaries 12 to serve as reflux to the column, the required liquid-level being maintained in receiver 11 by means of overflow-pipe 13 which returns some of the condensate to vessel 7. The condensate, before it enters receiver 11, is heated by passing it through a coil disposed in the vapour-space 3 of the column. Any condensate which forms in the vapour-space drains down through pipe 2 into the condenser 4. The condenser may be connected via cooling-trap 5 to a vacuum-pump (not shown). Condensate is withdrawn from the system via valve 8. In a modification, the condenser may be mounted cylindrically around the column. The separation of heavy water from ordinary water is mentioned.
