Abstract
Palm oil is purified by countercurrent washing with water in the liquid phase. The oil may be clarifed before countercurrent washing by heating e.g. to 70 DEG to 90 DEG C. and allowing non-oily extraneous matter to settle in a settling tank the clarified oil being drawn off from the liquid surface. The countercurrent washing step is carried out by feeding oil droplets into the base of a column supplied with water preferably at the same temperature as the oil from an inlet near the top of the column, the column being provided with a grid e.g. a grating or perforated disc intermediate the oil and water inlets. The grid has apertures totalling at least 40% of the cross-sectional area of the column and the water flow-rate may be adjusted to the free settling rate of the impurities contained in the oil. The oil passes from the column to a separator in which any entrained water may settle out.
