Apparatus for the biological purification of domestic and industrial waste water comprises a cylindrical tower 3, filled with a surface contact medium such as lava slag or coke 6, and provided at its lower end with an inlet 2 for the waste water and for air in excess, and at its upper end with an outlet 8 for the purified water and for dying sludge, which, as described, flow into a settling tank for the sludge. Mechanically pre-purified waste water is fed to the inlet by a pump 1 and is passed through a restriction 4, into which, due to the reduction in pressure, the air is drawn through a pipe 5. Baffles 12 of, e.g., sheet metal, may be fitted to ensure that the air does not pass directly up the sides of the tower; A coneshaped roof 9 may be mounted over the upper end of the tower with a pipe 10 for discharging foamed-out detergents. Some of the sludge may be returned from the tower top to the inlet 2, preferably above the nozzle 4. There may be an apertured transverse partition near the tower bottom.
