Abstract

494,637. Emergency-exit fastenings. NEWMAN & SONS, Ltd., W., and SHEAD, H. C. Jan. 18, 1938, No. 1589. [Class 44] In an emergency-exit fastening comprising upper and lower vertical bolts 1, 2'withdrawn by crush-bar 5, a catch is provided to retain the lower bolt withdrawn when the bolts are released for the first time, the upper bolt remaining operative to secure the door when closed. Bar 5 is carried by a lever 4 engaging a second lever, the inner end 8 of which withdraws the upper bolt 1. Bolt 1 has a depending projection 13 engaging one arm 14 of a lever 15 pivoted at 16 and connected to lower bolt 2 by a link 17 so that withdrawal of bolt 1 swings lever 15 in anticlockwise direction, Fig. 2, and withdraws bolt 2. When bolt 2 is withdrawn, an aperture 20 in lever 15 registers with and is engaged by a spring-pressed plunger 21 to retain bolt 2 withdrawn. Bolt 2 is released by pulling the head 23 of the plunger. Bolt 1 is shot by spring 12, and bolt 2 by gravity or by spring (not shown). When bolt 2 is shot, link 17 is in dead-centre position so that bolt 2 cannot be improperly released by implement. The bolts may be withdrawn by an outside knob, the spindle of which carries a follower 24 engaging a recess in part 13 of bolt 1.
