Abstract

795,061. Multiple fastenings; sliding bolts; keepers. WILMOT-BREEDEN, Ltd. March 28, 1956 [April 7, 1955], No. 10218/55. Class 44 A vehicle door fastening comprises a keeper 5 of conical or like form adapted to be secured to the body of the vehicle at a position adjacent to that occupied by the lower end of the free vertical edge 8 of the door when the latter is closed, and a fitting adapted to be mounted on a corresponding position on the door, which fitting includes a socket 9 for engagement by the keeper, a vertically slidable bolt 10 engageable with a notch 6 on the keeper and having a lateral projection 11 thereon, and a spring- loaded and pivoted push piece 12 having therein a notch 13 engageable by the projection 11. the arrangement being such that on retraction of the bolt 10 the push piece by exerting pressure on one end of the keeper 5 imparts an initial opening movement to the door. As shown, the push piece 12 includes an arm 15 and is biased towards the keeper by a spring 16. The fastening is combined with a fastening at the upper part of the door comprising a keeper 19 having an obliquely disposed hole for receiving a spring-loaded bolt 20 slidable on and in the plane of the door. The bolt 20 is operatively connected through a pair of arms 21, 23 and a link 24 to a central manually operable mechanism for actuating both bolts 10 and 20. The mechanism comprises a three-armed lever 28 pivoted on a pin 27 and one arm of which is connected through a link 17 with the bolt 10 and another arm of which is connected through the link 24 with the bolt 20. The third arm is formed with a slot 30 engaged by one end of a link 32 connected to a handle 35 on the inside of the door. Movement of the handle 35 to the right, locks both bolts in the shot position while movement to the left retracts the bolts. The bolts are retracable from the outside of the door by means of a push button 38 and a pair of levers 36, 37 pivoted on the pin 27. The button 38 engages a slot 40 in one arm of lever 37. This arm includes a part 41 disposed below a shoulder 42 on the lever 28, the other arm of which is connected to a tension spring 39. The lever 36 is connected to the link 18 and carries in a slot 43 a sleeve 44 for the push button 38. A neck portion 45 of the push button is normally accommodated within the sleeve 44 but is brought into register with and slides in the slot 40 in lever 37 when the button is depressed. In operation, the door is opened from the outside by depressing button 38 which permits the spring 39 to rock lever 37 and through parts 41 and 42, to rock the lever 28 thus to retract both bolts. The spring 16 imparts initial opening movement of the door and also through the link 18 and lever 36 releases the neck 45 of the push button from the slot 40. When the door is reclosed the push piece 12 rocks the levers 36 and 37 and restresses the spring 39.
