745,503. Door latches. WILMOT-BREEDEN, Ltd. Nov. 19, 1954 [Dec. 21, 1953], No. 35454/53. Class 44. A vehicle door fastening comprises the combination of a forked and spring-loaded pivoted latch 7, a ratchet 9 secured to the pivot pin 6 of the latch, a pawl 11 co-operating with the ratchet, a lever 13 operable from the outside of the door and a pawl releasing lever 17 both freely mounted coaxially with the pawl, a coupling lever 20 freely pivoted on the lever 13 and adapted to engage the pawl releasing lever, and a level 22, operable from the inside of the door, co-operating with the coupling lever. The latch is adapted to engage a striker pin 8 on the door fiame and is loaded by a spiral spring 10. Both the pawl 11 and the coupling lever 20 are spring-loaded. The lever 13 is adapted to be operated by a push-piece 14 and its movement is limited by a pin 15 which engages in a notch 16. The lever 22 is a bell-crank lever and both of its arms can engage the coupling lever 20. When the upper arm of the bell-crank lever 22 engages the coupling lever 20 it rotates it on its pivot and causes it to move the pawl releasing lever 17. This lever in turn bears on a pin 18 on the pawl and moves the pawl out of engagement with the ratchet 9, releasing the latch 7 so that the door can be. opened. When the push piece 14 is depressed the lever 13 is moved and since the coupling lever 20 is mounted on this lever it is also moved and operates the pawl releasing lever 17 to release the pawl so that the door can be opened. When the lower arm of the bell-crank lever 22 engages the coupling lever 20 it rotates it anti-clockwise out of engagement with the pawl releasing lever 17 and depression of the push-piece 14 cannot then open the door since although the lever 13 is moved the pawl releasing lever 17 is ineffective to disengage the pawl from the ratchet.
