Abstract

697,209. Automatic catches. HOUDAILLEHERSHEY CORPORATION. Jan. 9, 1952 [May 10, 1951], No. 683/52. Class 44 A catch for the door of a vehicle luggage compartment comprises a latching lever 16, Figs. 1, 4, mounted for pivotal and sliding movement on a plate 13, a dogging lever 29 pivoted to the plate 13 and engageable with the lever 16 to hold it in latched position; a pivoted locking lever 39 movable to engage the dogging lever and hold the latter in engagement with the latching lever, and push-button release mechanism including a push button 50 and a slidable member 56 engaging the locking lever 39. The downwardly depending nose 12 of the plate 13 on which the latching lever 16 is mounted projects in the closed position through an aperture in a striking plate 14. The plate 13 is mounted in a housing 17 secured to the door, which is hinged to swing about a horizontal axis. The lever 16 is pivotally mounted on a pin 23 which can slide in a slot 24 in the plate 13, and a torsion spring 25 around the pin biases the lever in counter clockwise direction and urges pin 23 towards the lower end of the slot, keeping lever 16 in engagement with one edge of the aperture in the striking plate. The dogging lever 29 is pivoted on the opposite side of plate 13 from the latching lever, and carries a pin 33 which passes through a slot in the plate and engages the bifurcated upper end of lever 16. It has a locking arm 37 extending upwardly beyond the flange 21. The locking lever 39, as shown in plan view in Fig. 3, is pivoted to flange 21 at 40 and biased by a spring 44, and has a lug 41 engageable by the locking arm 37 of the dogging lever. The dogging lever 29 has an arm 46, extending upwardly with a part 47 extending over an outwardly turned arm 49 of lever 39. The outside operating means for lever 39 comprises a pushbutton 50, Fig. 1, sliding in a lock casing 51, and being lockable, and operating a sleeve 52 which has a depending arm 56 adapted to make contact with and move the lever 39.
