Abstract
649,314. Latches. HALLAM, SLEIGH & CHESTON, Ltd. Sept. 20,1948, No. 24542. [Class 44] A vehicle door fastening comprises a pin 15, Fig. 1, mounted on the inner edge of the jamb which, on closing the door, rocks a fastening element 2 about its spindle 6, means being provided to retain the element 2 in its fastening position. The element 2 which is formed with a pair of arms 4, 5, on either side of the recess 3 in its upper edge, is fixed to the outer end of a short spindle 6, the inner end being rigid with a plate 8, Fig. 8. A spring 12 whose ends are anchored to a shallow case 13 and the plate 8, respectively, normally urges a shoulder 11 on the latter into contact with the upturned end 23 of a spring pressed slide bar 24. On the spindle 6 and plate 8 being rotated by the element 2 contacting pin 15, the end 23 slides over the edge of plate 8 to engage a second shoulder 9 on the plate, a further shoulder 10 affording a safety catch. To open the door from outside, a press button 27 located near handle 28 is actuated, whereupon a second spring pressed slide bar 30 is moved inwards by the contact of its upturned end 29 with the button plunger 34. Since the slide bars 24, 30, are coupled by a projection 31 on the downturned end of bar 24 engaging a recess 32 in bar 30, this movement of bar 30 releases the end 23 from shoulder 9, the plate 8 returning under spring action to the position shown. The plate 8 may be released from inside the door by rotating directly, or through a push button, an arm on a spindle 41. This rotates a bell crank lever mounted on the spindle so that one arm 36 of the lever retracts the slide 24 by acting on its upturned end 23. The outside push button may be rendered inoperative by bringing the arm 42 of a lever opposite the upturned end 43 of slide bar 30. A plate 17 to which the pin 15 is attached, is provided with a spring pressed slide 19, the upper surface 21 of which contacts the lower rounded corner 2a of element 2 on closing the door and finally engages beneath the element to prevent the door rattling or dropping. According to the Provisional Specification, the jamb is furnished with a C-shaped rib the upper portion of which replaces pin 15 and the lower portion of which contacts the base of element 2 if the door drops slightly, whilst the push button 27 is replaced by a trigger.
