Abstract

1516093 Door chain C D PRATT 9 Sept 1975 [15 June 1974 12 Feb 1975] 26620/74 and 5885/75 Heading E2A A security device which permits a door to open a slight amount only may be held out of operation by manually operated means on one side of the door or disengaged by key operated means on the other. When the door is opened by knob 38, cam 37 acts upon back-plate 28 of double bolt 24 and withdraws heads 27 from keepers 41. Bolt 19, however is not operated by cam 37 and may extend into shroud 13 under the influence of spring 19a when the door is opened sufficiently to free head 20 from engagement with portion 44. Opening the door brings head 20 into contact with the catch 47 on chain 46, trapping the catch in shroud 13. The chain 46 is anchored at its other end by a spring (not shown) and carries a stop (also not shown) which governs the extent to which the door may be opened. If however, peg 23 is inserted in hole 23a and thus brought into contact with indentation 22 in bolt 19, this bolt is held in the disengaged position and the door may be opened fully. The bolt may also be disengaged by turning lock 35, operating cam 34 which contacts both bolt 24 and flange 21 on bolt 19. In the embodiment illustrated in Fig. 5, the chain 46 passes over rollers 60, 61 held by screws in holes 62 extending into member 40 on the door-frame 43. By inverting member 40 and using holes 62a to hold the rollers 60, 61, the device may be adapted from use with a left-hand closing door to use with a right-hand closing.
