Description

July 10, 1951 c J. CANTEL'LO I 2,550,274
SASH LOCK Filed Aug. 29, 1949 INVENTOR.
" ATTORNEYS Patented July 10, 1951 UNITED STATES 2 Claims.
This invention relates to sash locks.
An object of this invention is to provide a sash lock which is carried by both the upper and lower sashes of a window and which is adapted to automatically lock the sashes when they are moved to closed position.
Another object of this invention is to provide an automatic sash lock including a springpressed bolt carried by the lower rail with a trigger or holding member on the lower rail of the upper sash, and a tripping member carried by the upper rail of the lower sash, the tripping member being engageable with the trigger when either one of the sashes is moved to closed position and With the other sash in closed position.
With a sash look as embodied in this invention, the lock cannot readily be released from the outside.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the arrangement, combination and details of construction disclosed in the drawing and specification, and then more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing,
Figure 1 is a detail front elevation of a sash locking means constructed according to an embodiment of this invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2,
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawing, the numerals Hi and II designate generally upper and lower sashes, and the numerals I2 and |3 designate the lower and upper rails respectively of the sashes Ill and II. A spring-pressed locking bolt [4 is slidably mounted in a housing l5 which is secured by fastening means It to the upper side of the lower rail l2. The bolt l4 includes a stem I! about which a spring l8 engages. The bolt |4 when in extended position is adapted to engage over a keeper plate I!) which is secured by fastening means 20 to the upper side of upper rail, I3.
The bolt I4 is held in inoperative or retracted position by means of a tripping member 2| which is pivotally mounted on a pivot 22 extending through an upstanding ear 23. The tripping member 2| when in a lowered operative position is disposed in confronting position to the inner end of the bolt M, as shown in dotted lines in Figure 1.
The tripping member 2| has formed integral therewith a releasing lever or arm 24 which is adapted to be engaged by a releasing lug 25 which is struck forwardly from an upright resilient strap 26. The strap 26 has extending from the lower end thereof a right angularly disposed base member 2'! which is secured by fastening means 28 to the upper side of the keeper plate l9. The upper end of the strap 26 is curved inwardly, as indicated at 29, to facilitate the flexing of strap 26 so as to move lug 25 inwardly and away from lever 24.
The inner end of the base member 21 is formed with a finger 3|] engaging in an opening 3| formed in the keeper plate l9 so that the base 2'! will be held against turning. The large end of spring I8 engages a lug 32 struck inwardly from the back wall of housing I5;
In the use and operation of this device, when bolt I4 is in released position, this bolt is pushed inwardly against the tension of spring l8 and trigger or holding member 2| is automatically lowered to a confronting position with respect to bolt M on strap 26 being flexed inwardly. At this time lever 24 will be in an upwardly inclined position, as shown in dotted lines in Figure 1. When the lower sash is lowered to a position where rails l2 and I3 are in confronting position, releasing lug 25 will engage lever 24 so as to rock this lever downwardly and swing trigger or holding member 2| upwardly to a released position. With trigger 2| in a released position, bolt 4 will be moved outwardly to a position overlying keeper plate l9 by spring I8.
I do not mean to confine myself to the exact details of construction herein disclosed, but claim all variations falling within the purview of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A sash lock for locking upper and lower sashes together comprising a housing adapted to be secured to the lower rail of the upper sash, a spring-pressed bolt carried by said housing and movable inwardly of said upper sash, a holding member pivotally carried by said housing and adapted when in operative position to be disposed in confronting position with respect to said bolt, a lever extending angularly from said holding member, a keeper adapted to be secured to the upper rail of the lower sash, and a flexible lever rocking means fixed relative to said keeper for rocking said lever downwardly when the lower sash is lowered to a position with the upper rail thereof coplanar with the lower rail of the upper sash and movable inwardly to release said 3 holding member with the sash in said lowered position.
2. A sash look for locking upper and lower sashes together, comprising a housing adapted to be secured to the lower rail of the upper sash, a spring-pressed bolt carried. by said housing, a bolt holding member pivotally carried by said housing for holding said bolt in retracted position, an obtusely inclined lever extending from said bolt holding member, a flexible releasing member having an inwardly movable latch, and means mounting said releasing member on the upper rail of the lower sash for engagement with said lever upon lowering of the lower sash or raising of the upper sash to rock said lever and swing said holding member to released position relative to said bolt.
