Description

Feb. 8, 1949.
R- KEMMET LOCK BOLT Filed NOV. 5, 1945 Inventor meinhum karma;
Attorney:
Patented Feb. 8, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFlCE LOCK BOLT V Reinhold Kemmet, Everett, Wash. Application November 5, 1945, Serial No. 626,673
This invention relates to lock constructions and I particularly to the type of looks that may be used on automobile doors.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a simplified mechanism for such a purpose.
Another object is the provision of a lock that may be easily installed in the door, or other openings.
Another object is the provision of an automobile door lock that may be operated from the front seat to lock the rear door.
And another object is to eliminate the use of springs for actuating the lock.
The above and other objects will become apparent from a reading of the specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 illustrates an application of the device;
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the lock, partly in section;
Figure 3 is a front elevation;
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 3 and;
Figure 5 is an enlarged view of the elements of the lock.
Referring now to the drawing the numeral denotes an automobile, although the lock may be used in any desirable manner.
The lock is embedded in a support I3 of the automobile l8 and is arranged on a casing M which, in turn, is made fast to a shield l5 by means of bent over lugs I6, l1, l6 and i9, the shield being held to the support I3 in any preferred manner, as indicated at 2B and 2 I.
In the shield I5 there is provided an opening 22 through which extends an actuating handle 23 which is pivoted in the casing M, the pivot, preferably being rounded on one end, as indicated at 24, Figure 5, and squared on the other end, as indicated at 25. On the inner Wall of a recess 26 of support 13 is located a plate 27 which provides an opening for reception of the round portion 24, while at the opposite side of the handle 23, square portion is resiliently held either in its locked or unlocked position by a fiat spring. The spring has two fingers 28 and 29 and is fastened to the casing M by means of a screw 30.
The handle or finger piece 23 is substantially L shaped, having its upwardly extending arm 3| retaining a pin 32 in its upper end, this pin 32 Works in an opening 33 of a bolt member 34.
The device acts as a snap lock in as much as when the handle 23 is snapped upwardly, from the position illustrated in Figure 2, the bolt 34 1 Claim. (Cl. 292-143) iii) will be thrown to its locking position, as illustrated in Figure 4 and the fingers 28 and 22 of the spring will resiliently hold the bolt in either its locked or unlocked position. When in locked position it will be seated in the opening l2 of the door Ii.
While I have described and illustrated one embodiment of my invention, it should be understood that various modifications may be made while keeping within the scope of the appended claim. 7
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A look for the rear door of an automobile having a door post and front and rear doors, said lock comprising a frame adapted to be detachably mounted in the door post and having an outwardly opening, recessed face opening toward the side of said door post which is engaged by the front vehicle door, a sleeve mountedinsaid frame and opening outwardly of the opposite side of the door post and toward the rear vehicle door, an L-shaped lever pivotally mounted at its apex in said frame and having one arm thereof extending into the recessed face of the frame and swingably disposed relatively thereto, a bolt reciprocally mounted in the sleeve and provided with a transverse opening adjacent its inner end, said sleeve being provided with a longitudinal slot, the other arm of said lever extending upwardly and being provided with a restricted extension swingably disposed in the slot of said sleeve and loosely engaging the opening of said bolt whereby the bolt will be projected and retracted when the first mentioned end of the lever is manually actuated in the recessed face of the frame, said bolt, when in a projected position, being adapted to engage a recess in the free edge of the rear door for retaining said door in a closed and locked position, and said recessed face of the frame being disposed to be closed by said front door when the latter is in a closed position to prevent actuation of the lever for looking or unlocking the rear door.
