Abstract
1,108,733. Latches. WILMOT BREEDEN Ltd. 12 Aug., 1965 [12 Aug., 1964], No. 32801/64. Heading E2A. A releasable fastening device comprises a rotary latch member 16 16 which turns about an axis fixed with respect to that member for latching engagement with a striker or keeper 14, retaining means which retain the member in an unlatched position against a latch spring, and a trip member, which on door closure, is displaced against spring loading to free the retaining means, the spring loading of the trip member cushioning the shock of door closure and provided a throwout action which assists door opening on release of the latch member. As shown, the invention is applied to the tail gate of a vehicle and comprises a plastics moulding 5 for mounting on the tail gate and a striker and guide portion 9 for mounting on the vehicle floor 10. The portion 9 comprises a steel guide member 12 and a substantially square section peg 14 projecting therefrom for latching engagement by the latch member 16 mounted in a backplate 6 of the moulding 5 and biased to the latched position by a spring 26. The latch member 16 is in the form of a cam disc 19 having a lobe 23 projecting from its lower face and is actuated by a lever handle 2 through an arm 35 which engages a cam plate 24 attached to a spindle 20 carrying the latch member 16. The handle 2 contains a key operated lock 31 which acts to rotate the arm 35 away from the plate 24 through 90 degrees relative to the handle 2. A spring- loaded plunger 27 is slidably mounted in the moulding 5 for engagement with the striker peg 14 which in the latched position, Fig. 4 engages a face 28 of the latch member lobe 3. In the unlatched position a side edge of the plunger engages a surface 29 of the lobe to retain the latch member against its spring 26. Displacement of the plunger 27 by the peg 14 as it moves into the slot 18 frees the latch member for movement to the position shown. In another similar arrangement, the latch member is actuated by a push button.
