[Class 44] In a vehicle door fastening comprising a spring-loaded bolt, a pair of levers operated respectively by an outside handle and an inside handle to retract the bolt, and means operable by the inside handle to lock the bolt against retraction by the outside handle, the inside handle is slidably guided and supported by an escutcheon on the inside sill of the door. As shown, the bolt a shot by spring c can be retracted by lever d on the outside handle spindle f and engaging a shoulder g on the bolt. A second lever e engages a shoulder h on the bolt and is connected by link i to a pivoted lever j the upper end of which extends through the sill m and is provided with a knob or handle n which is slidably guided and supported by an arcuate slot p in an escutcheon o fixed to the sill. A pivoted detent q loaded by spring u bears against a cam surface r on lever e. Movement of handle n to the right from its normal mid-position retracts the bolt. Movement in the opposite direction rocks detent q anti-clockwise so that its left-hand end engages behind lever d to prevent operation by the outside handle and a projection s on lever e engages a recess t in the detent to retain the parts in locking position. In a modification the handle n is slidable rectilinearly and is directly connected by a bent link with the upper end of lever e, the locking of the outside handle is effected by a projection on lever e engaging under a projection on lever d, and the parts are retained in normal and locking positions by a spring-loaded detent engaging in one or other of two notches formed in the lower end of lever e.
