[Class 44] A latch, particularly for vehicle doors, comprises a spring-loaded latch bolt, an outside handle movable at right angles to the plane of the door, a spring-loaded slidable member located between and substantially at right angles to the handle and bolt, and a spring- loaded thrust piece pivotally mounted on the slidable member and adapted to impart retractive movement to the bolt. The sliding bolt c, Figs. 1 and 2, is retracted against the force of a spring d by a handle, preferably of the sunken type pivoted to move at right angles to the door. The spring-loaded sliding member h is located between the handle and the bolt, substantially at right angles thereto. On the member h is pivoted an obliquely arranged thrust-piece i which at its free end abuts against a projection j on one side of the bolt c. An outward pull on the handle moves the member h towards the bolt, and the thrust-piece bearing on the projection j retracts the bolt. An inside handle may be provided, secured to a spindle m carrying an arm n adapted to abut against a lateral projection o on the bolt c. To enable the door to be locked, a second bolt p may be provided, operated by means of a pin r thereon engaging in a cam slot q in the arm, which then takes the form of a plate. The shape of the slot is such that the bolt p is not affected when the inside handle is turned to withdraw the main bolt, but is shot when the handle is turned in the opposite sense. A spring detent u holds the arm n in the two alternative positions. If it is required to operate the locking bolt only from outside, the inside handle is arranged to move the main bolt c through the arm n, and a lock w, Fig. 4, preferably of the barrel type, is arranged to actuate the locking bolt p through a crank-pin x engaging a slot y formed in a lug z on the bolt.
