Abstract

495,560. Latches. SLEIGH, H. L., CHESTON, A. S., and BOOTH, J. H. April 10, 1937, No. 29295/38. Divided out of 493,768. [Class 44] A latch mechanism comprises a bolt 4 slidably mounted in a casing and biassed to its projected position by a lever 22, pivoted to the casing and acted on by a coiled tension spring 21, the line of pull of the spring being transverse to the direction of movement of the bolt. The other end of the spring is connected to a lever 19 the end 18 of which contacts the boss 8 of a follower 12 on the inside handle spindle and locates the inside handle in its normal position by engaging a notch 16 in the boss. When the handle is turned to retract the bolt, the end 18 of the lever 19 rides on the boss 8, the part 28 of which may be formed as a cam so as to allow the lever 19 to turn about its pivot to keep the length of the spring, and hence the pressure on the bolt, constant, or the cam may be formed so as to diminish the pressure as the bolt is retracted. By turning the inside handle in the opposite direction, the follower 12 is brought behind a shoulder 27 on the follower 13 to prevent actuation by the outside handle, and the end 18 of the lever 19 springs over the projection 17 on the boss 8 to prevent accidental unlocking. An auxiliary spring 29 is provided to project the bolt if the spring 21 breaks. The latch casing is of the type described in Specification 493,768. The keeper may be of known type having safety and main catch faces.
