[Class 44] A door or like lock comprises a casing 1, Fig. 1, a deadbolt 2 slidably mounted within the casing 1, a gear wheel 3 operatively connected with the deadbolt 2 and a second gear wheel 10 capable of being turned by key, knob, or other operating mechanism and normally out of meshing engagement with the first gear wheel 3 but engageable therewith by initial turning movement of the key or the like to rotate the first gear wheel 3 and move the deadbolt into either its fully thrown or retracted positions, the first gear wheel 3 having a connection with the deadbolt 2 such as to render the deadbolt deadlocked in its fully thrown position. The first gear wheel 3 has an extension 9 which receives a pin 8 whose reduced diameter part enters a boring in a slide 4. This slide 4 is movable in a recess 5 in the bolt 2 and houses a spring 6 whose lower end carries a friction pad 7. When in the completely shot or retracted position the axis of the first gear wheel 3 lies on a line passing through the centre of the peg 8 and lying parallel with the direction of travel of the bolt, so deadlocking the latter. The second gear wheel may be formed in two parts 10, 10a, Fig. 3, having a combined thickness equal to that of the firstgear wheel 3 and formed as two concentrically arranged sleeves 11, 15, mounted one within the other, the sleeve 11 being slotted at 12 to receive the connecting bar of the key mechanism and the second sleeve being operatively connected with a door knob or a second key mechanism on the interior of the door. Flat surfaces 17, 19, on a member 16 formed on the interior of the lock casing 1 are engaged by the extremity of the slide 4 when in the retracted, and fully thrown positions respectively. In a modification, Fig. 7, the first gear wheel is formed with an arm 21 having a curved extremity 22 which engages arcuate-shaped surfaces 23, 24, on the bolt 2, the surfaces having a radius of curvature equal to the length of the arm 21 from its pivot. A spring-pressed plunger 30 engaging a cam-like face 29 on the arm 21 retains the arm in contact with either a shoulder 27 or a pin 28 in the casing 1.
