Abstract
597,382. Door fastenings. ROWLEY, Ltd., and CLAVERLEY, A. F. Aug. 17, 1945, Nos. 21074 and 33694. [Class 44] A spring-controlled pivoted door handle, for both right- and lefthand doors, comprises an attachment piece, which has at its inner side a stop or stops and in which is rotatably supported one end of the handle; this end of the handle has coiled round it a spring, the ends of which abut the stop or stops, and a member is secured to the inner end of the handle to co-operate with either end of the spring. An attachment plate a, Fig. 2, is formed with a hollow boss, having a hole in its front for a trunnion-like part d on the inner end of the handle e, and having at its inner side two diametrically opposite stops g ; a spring h surrounds the trunnion-like part d, its ends being bent to abut against and project beyond the stops g ; on the inner end of the part d is secured a retaining piece i, which contacts the inner face of the attachment plate a, and has in its edge two segmental notches providing an intermediate projection m and two shoulders k against which the extended ends of the spring abut. When the handle is moved, one of the shoulders k carries one end of the spring with it ; movement of the handle is limited by the contact of one side of the projection m with the other end of the spring. This end being held by its stop g. On release, the handle is returned to its normal position by the spring h. In a modification, a single stop is provided on the attachment plate ; the ends of the spring bear against its opposite sides, and the intermediate projection on the retaining piece lies between the ends of the spring. Alternatively, Fig. 8, the boss b consists of a ring formed on the attachment plate a and having in it a gap n, the ends of which limit movement of the handle and through which the ends of the spring h extend ; outside the gap n is a stop o for the ends of the spring between which lies a projection p bent inwards at right angles on the retaining piece i. In another modification, Fig. 11, the attachment plate a and spring h are as shown in Fig. 2, but secured to the part d of the handle is a collar r with a radial projection s which carries with it one end of the spring when the handle is moved. The retaining piece i has a projection t which engages a stop u on the attachment plate to limit movement of the handle. This construction is directly applicable to either a right- or a left-hand door since the handle can be moved to either of two operative positions 180 degrees apart in which the projection s on the collar r bears on different ends of the spring h. For use on a cupboard door or the like, any one of the handles described above is provided with an extension to be engaged by a hasp on the door frame. Specification 577,878 is referred to.
