[Class 44] The locking arrangement for motor vehicle doors claimed in claim 7 of the parent Specification is modified by providing the sliding cam member with two oppositely facing cam surfaces of similar shape but opposite sense so that the cam member may be reversed to adapt the latch for right or left hand doors. The outside handle 1, Fig. 1, has a boss 3 formed inside the rose plate with opposite projections 7 for engagement in opposite slots in a sleeve member 4 carried on the squared spindle 2 and urged into the connected position by a spring 23. The outside handle is disconnected from the spindle by rotation of the inside handle in the direction opposite to that for releasing the latch, causing axial displacement of the spindle 2 to free the projections 7 from engagement with the sleeve 4. The inside handle 9 is rotatable on the spindle 2 and carries one or more spaced projections 14, Fig. 5 (two as shown), co-operating with an equivalent number of spaced cam faces 12 or 13 on either end of the cam member 10, which is slidably but not rotatably mounted on the spindle 2. A collar 15 on the cam member 10 is cut away to provide shoulders 16, Fig. 2, arranged to co-operate with fixed stop surfaces 17e, Fig. 5, formed on the inside rose plate 17. In operation when the inside handle is turned to release the latch, the projection 14 abuts the end 18 of the cam surface 13 on the member 10 which is thereby rotated and turns the spindle 2 to release the latch. When the inside handle is turned in the opposite direction, one of the shoulders 16 on the cam member abuts one of the stops 17e and is thereby prevented from rotating. The projections 14 therefore slide along the cam surfaces causing axial displacement of the inside handle and of the spindle 2 which is connected to it through packing washers 21 and a circlip 19. The inside handle is retained in this position by a slight hollow 13b on the cam surface into which the projection 14. falls. To reverse the direction of operation of the handle the cam 10 is reversed so the cam surfaces 12 at the other end co-operate with the projections 14. A spring 26 acting against a sleeve of the inner handle prevents rattling.
