This invention relates to locking mechanism andpartioularly to such mechanism embodying a-locking device of the cylinder p Ji. g V I The objects of the invention are to provide improvedmechanism or means actuated by the cylinder lock for throwing the bolt or other locking member, said mechanism or means being adapted for actuation by the plug of a cylinderlock in which the plug is concentric with the cylinder, the arangement being such that saidmechanism or means can be entirely retracted within the cylinderto enable it to be screwed into the look. I
A further object of the invention is to provide locking mechanism of the kind described in which the bolt actuating mechanism has a quick throw with'limited movement of the key so that the locking. boltcan be fully thrown with relatively small key movement.- I i Other objects of the invention are'in part obvious and in part will appear more inv detail hereinafter.
In the drawings, Fig; 1' represents a sectional elevation on the line 11', F igr 3, through a supporting bodyprovided with my improved locking mechanism, the casing platebeing omitted to expose interior parts and the locking bolt being shown in released or unlocked position; Fig. 2 is a similar View showing the parts in locked position; Fig. 3 is a'sectional elevation on the line 33,Fi,g 2; Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the inner end of the cylinder lock; and Fig. 5 is a detail section on t-heline- 5-5,
My invention contemplates the organization of a cylinder lock, such as shown in Fig. 4,-with any suitable lock including a movable locking bolt or the like actuated by the cylin'der lock, such organization being shown in Fig. 1. The cylinder lock is of special form in that it comprises a relatively stationary cylinder member 1 non-rotatably secured to the door or other part 2 to which the lock is secured, such as by the usual holding screw 3, and in which cylinder member is a rotatable plug 4 actuated by the key 5. Said plug is concentric with the cylinder 1 instead of being eccentric thereto as in most forms of cylinder looks. The key actuated interlocking devices between the cylinder and plug may, of course, be of any suitable description and may be either pins, levers or any other like devices, and, for example, may be of the same construction and'arrangement' as illustrated'in my 1 cation for cylinder lock, filed anuary 13, 1922, Serial No. 528,952, to which reference maybe had for a more complete description thereof it required. The cylinder 1 is screwed through an opening 6 inthe door'2 into a threaded opening in the casing 7, which is provided with-the usuaiiremovable plate or cover 8. In saidfcasing are located the locking bolt and othercooperating parts.
which may be of any SilltflblflClQSQl-flPtlOIl. The drawings show forthis purpose a'slidable locking bolt 9on which is pivoteda spring actuated lever 10;having a'hook porrior -applijtion 11 working between the two bevelled stops 12 on the bolt, said lever being pivoted to the bolt 9 and having a projection 13 cooperating 'Withthe stationary stop' or abutment 14, all as usual; The locking bolt is thrown by amember operated'by the rotatable plug 4 and which in its movement to and: :fro enters the recess between the two stops 12, engages the end of the'hook member' 11 and pushes the same back, and then by engagement with one or the other of the bolt stops 12 produces sliding motion of the bolt, after'which the lever 10 is'returned by its spring 15 to latching position. To efi'ect operative connection between the rotating plug 4 and the movable bolt 9, the cylinder lock of the present invention is provided with mechanism as follows: ()n the inner end'oftlie cylinder member 1 is a stationary ring 16 which may be integral with the cylinder but is shown as held there to by screws 17, and onwhich 'ispivotally mounted at 18 a lever 19 having an elongated "slot'2O therein. Withinthe opening inthe ring 16 is rotatably mounted the disc shaped base 21 of a crank arm 22, said arm having an opening 23 through which to insert a screw driver or other implement for attaching said crank arm to the end of the plug 4 by the screw 24. Said'plug and thecrank arm rotate together and are held against relative rotation by wings or ears 25 on the plug entering recesses in the base of the crank arm. Said crank arm, eccentrically to the plug, is provided with a pin or crank 26 entering the slot 20 in lever 19.
After the lockcasing 7 with its contained parts is mortised into the door and secured in place such as by the screws 80 the cylinturned to the position shown in Fig. 1 is screwed into the lock casing until the parts reach the position shown in Figs. 1 and 3, whereupon the holding screw '3 is turned up to enter the usual longitudinal groovell in the cylinder 1. With the parts in the positions shown in Fin. 1, both'the crank arm 22 and all parts or lever 19- are within the cylindrical boundary of the cylinder 1. It the key 5 is now turned so as to produce rotation of the plug in the counter clockwisedirection, Fig. 1, crank arm 22 also turns in the counter clock-wise direction and its pin 26 travels along the slot in lever 19 and causes the same to turn about its pivot so that its outer end enters the recess between stops 12 and pushes back the lever 10 to the position shown in 2. Continued motion completes the throwing movement of the locking bolt and again withdraws lever 19 within the limits of the cylnder on the opposite side of its eccentric,
as will be readily understood. Reverse motion unlatches the bolt and then moves it back to unlocked position. 7
With this arrangement full locking or unlocking movement requires approximately rotation, of the key, instead o1v 360, as is usually the case, although itdesired,
the key can be given more movement. for
the locking effect. Again, the arrangement enables the cylinder and plug to be concentric with each other, thus reducing the required size of the cylinder, so that the cylinder mechanism as a whole may be reduced in size. As the pin 26 on the crank arm travels through its orbit, it approaches nearer and nearer the pivot 18 so that when lever 19 is eliecting the locking or unlocking movement the multiplication of travel is a maximum. The locking movement is therefore acomplished with a quick snapping action calculated to over-ride slight obstructions, as where the parts do not work efficiently or are inaccurately made.
Further advantages of the invention will be apparent to those skilled'in the art.
What I claim is:
1. Cylinder locking mechanism, comprisbolt operating lever pivoted on the cylinder 'member on an axis eccentric to the cylinder axis, and an operating arm therefor rotatable with the plug and having a crank pm working 111 said slot, said pin being radially more remote. from the olu axis than the axis of rotation of said lever. V
3. Cylinder locking mechanism, comprising relatively rotatable concentrically disposed cylinder and plug members, said cylinder member having an annular end portion, a crank arm having a base extending through the opening in said annular end portion andv secured to rotate with the plug, a bolt-throwing lever pivoted to'the cylinder and lying between the end 01" the cylinder.
and said arm, and inter-engaging operating connections between said arm and lever. I
. 41-. Cylinder locking mechanism, compris ing relatively rotatable concentrically disposed cylinder and plug members, said cylinder member having an annular end portion, a crank arm having a base extending through the opening in said annular end portion, a securing device extending through the base and into the plug for securing said arm thereto, said arm having an opening providing access to said device, a bolt-throwing lever pivoted to the cylinder and lying between said cylinder and. said arm, and
inter-engaging operating connections between said arm and lever.
In testimony whereof I hereby affix my signature.
