Still further objects of" myinvention reside in theprovision of a locking plate assemblywhich may be inexpensively made and. is of: compact construction, whereby; upon mounting beneath the escutcheonplate, compact and efficient spindle lock mechanism is provided, serving not only as a bathroom lockbut as an inter-com: municating door lock operable by pin tumbler. cylinder mechanism.
For the attainment of the foregoing objects and such further objects as mav appear herein or be hereinafter pointed, out, I make reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof, inv which:

The tongue 40 is arranged to lie in the path of the shoulders 38 and 39 and thereby limits the oscillating movement of the knob spindle 4 corresponding to the movement necessary to retract the bolt of the latch casing l2.
Positioned over the disc 32 I provide a locking cam 4| in tiltable position by passing a headed rivet 42 through an orifice 43 formed in the looking cam, the rivet being upset at 44 on the outer face of the plate 30. The rivet is formed with an enlarged head 45 beneath which is positioned the cam spring 46 in the form of a warped leaf spring having a finger 41 entering an orifice 48 to cause the cam spring 46 to move with the looking cam 4| as it is rotated in a, manner which will appear more clearly as this description proceeds.
The'cam spring 46 in its action beneath the head 45 of the rivet 42 holds the locking cam 4| in a predetermined position, offering adequate friction while permitting the tilting movement hereinafter to be described. The locking cam is formed adjacent its lower edge 49 with a disc engaging abutment corresponding substantially to the peripheral edge 31 of the locking disc 32. In position as shown in Figure 2 contact of the edges 31 and 49 will serve to prevent oscillation of the knob operated spindle l4.
Spacer pins 59 and cooperate with pins 52 and 53 to maintain the plate 30 properly positioned in respect to the escutcheo plate 24 and adequately house the mechanism thus far described in relation to the escutcheon plate 24. These spacer pins may likewise be the shanks of rivets aifixing the plate 30 to the escutcheon 24. The pins 50 and 5|, however, act as abutments or stops for the locking cam 4|. In the position shown in Figure 2 the pin 50 prevents counter-clockwise rotation of the locking cam 41 by engaging the edge 54 of the locking cam.
The locking cam 4| is suificiently eccentrically positioned upon the rivet 42 to prevent displacement in oscillating the spindle l4. Thus, the pin 50, the eccentric position of the locking cam 4| coupled with the motion transmitting mechanism hereinafter described, all cooperate to prevent displacement of the cam 4| from its locking position, as in one direction of rotation of the disc 32 the cam will tend to be driven into abutting position with the pin 59, and in another direction of oscillation the eccentric mounting of the plate is in the pre-dead center position for any counter-clockwise movement which may be imparted to the locking disc 32.
The locking cam has its upper edge generally flared and is formed with the arcuate edge 55 whose center is coincident with the center through the rivet 42. This edge is formed with a segmented gear 56 arranged to mesh with the segmental gear 51 formed on the periphery of the turn knob spindle hub 58. The spindle hub 58 is formed with a flange 59 entering the orifice 60 in the plate and is then upset over the washer 6| to hold the hub 58 against displacement while revolubly mounted. Axially, the hub 58 is formed with a keying orifice 62 arranged to receive the lock operating spindle 28. The edge of the spindle 28 is slotted to receive in keying engagement the lock operating spindle bar ll of ribbon contour.
While I have shown and described pins 50, 5|,
52, and 53 as spacer pins, it will be understood that these pins may be integrally formed with the escutcheon plate 24 in a position corresponding to the orifices shown on the plate 30 at the pins 59, 5|, 52, and 53, and that screws 63 may be passed through these orifices to engage the pins disposed from the escutcheon plate and properly support the plate in position with respect to the escutcheon to provide adequate clearance for the motion transmitting mechanism.
By the construction described and illustrated, it will be clear that oscillation of the interior knob 26 will carry with it the spindle M to retract the latch bolt mechanism within the casing I2.
In the position as shown in Figure 4, the locking disk 32 will be carried with the spindle l4, the action whereof being limited as the shoulders 38 and 39 come into contact with the tongue 40 upon counter-clockwise or clockwise oscillation. The spindle carried by the turn button or knob 29 rotates the segmental gear 5'1 on the periphery of the turn knob spindle hub 58 to in turn transmit movement to the camming plate 4| until the limiting position is reached where the edge 54 abuts the pin 50. The camming edge 49 is then brought into engagement with the locking peripheral edge 31 on the locking disk 32, to prevent movement of the disk 32 thereby preventing retraction of the latch bolt through the medium of the spindle l4 passing through the keying opening 36.
While operation from the interior may be effected by the turn button or knob 29, similar locking and unlocking action may be secured by the lock l6 operated by the key from the exterior and which may rotate the spindle bar I! which in turn is keyed with the hub 58 carrying the segmental gear section 51.
Slight of]? position of the locking disk 32 from the normal position caused by the inability of spring operation to overcome the bearing friction where a spring projected bolt is used or by a positively operated bolt, will be overcome by the resetting action provided by the interengagement between the camming plate 4| and the locking disk 32 the operation of the device imparting oscillating movement to the locking cam 4| to restore it to the locking position. In this manner, not only does the locking cam serve to engage the peripheral edge 3! to hold the disk 32 against rotation, but movement is transmitted to it within limits tending to reset it to the normal position where the disk is in the position shown in Figures 2 and 4.
It will thus be observed that I have provided not only a novel spindle lockin mechanism of compact and inexpensive construction, but a transmission for oscillating the bolt spindle from the turn knob or cylinder bar hub by the i t engagement afforded by the plates comprising the camming plate and locking disk. Thus while my invention carries forth some of the features of my prior aforementioned application, for providing a bar lock construction, the transmission assembly which I have provided readily adapts my construction for operation by a lock cylinder.
Having thus described my invention and illustrated its use, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a door lock comprising a casing for a bolt and an oscillable spindle for operating the same to retract it, the combination therewith of a key operable plug and cylinder mounted on one side of the door and having a bar directed to the other side, an escutcheon covered plate on said last 5 side, a hub mounted on said plate into which said bar from said key plug extends in keying engagement, said plate carrying a transmission for oscillating said bolt spindle by movement of said first hub, said transmission including a pair of interengaging plates, each journalled on said first plate, one comprising a second hub to receive the bolt operating spindle in keying engagement, the other plate driven from said first hub, said interengaging plates being inter-related to permit oscillating the bolt spindle hub and having extended engaging peripheral portions to transmit rotary movement to the spindle hub from the first hub.
2. In a door lock in accordance with claim 1 wherein said transmission includes intermeshing segmental gears between said inter-engaging MORRIS FALK.
