J. E. FLOYD LOCK Filed Dec. 9, 1922 y y Vf/o @MGMM ment by the Patented Get.v 227-', i925.`
- UNITED. STAT JOHN E. FLOYD, Or calorico; ILLINOIS, AssIcNOB or ONEQHALF y'ro WELLINGTON s.
e PATENTOFFICE.
wmIPLIE, :or` CHICAGO, ILLINOIS. Loox.
y Application lllelcl'lec'aemher` Toallwhomitmayconcm:
Be it known that I, JOHN vEuFLOYD, a citizen of the United States, residing'at Chicago, in the`county ,of- Cook and'State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to locks of the spring latch type.
improve and simplify springlatche's.
Afurther object is to rovide means, op erablejby the key of the atch, to retainthe bolt of the latch retracted so longl as the key remains in -the'vlatch and to permit its move- One of the objects of the invention;l is to key is withdrawn.
A further object is to improve 'Fand cheapen the construction of a standard door latch or night latch byfremoving twolparts therefrom and arranging the remainingA parts vto` perform additionally the function of the parts removed in a more 'convenient and practical manner.
. Another object is to provide means which will yieldingly retainl the key in the lock -with the bolt retracted and which will not permit the key to be `withdrawn until the bolt has first been released and moved to locked position.
Otherobjects `and advantages will readily appear to persons skilled inthe art from a consideration of-'the following description, when taken in conjunction with the drawing, wherein e Fig. 1 is a section thru a door showing the key land lock mechanismwith respectpto the lato Fig. 2 is a .plan View of the latch. A
Fig. 3 is anenlarged view of the latch Y mechanism with the cover plate removed,
showing parts in section taken on line 3*-3 of Fig.
Figfet-'is'a transverse section taken sub? stantially on/line 4.-'4 ofF-ig. 3. In all of the views the same referencev characters indicate corresponding arts.
Night latches, such as .herein disc osed, are
usuallyfplaced on doors provided with another lock and knob-actuated latch-bolt. To
open the door, the. knob-actuated llatch-bolt must be withdrawn' by rotating the knob, requiring the use of one h and, and the keyactuated; latch-bolt must be withdrawn -by rotating the key kwith the other hand, thus spring-of the latch when thel s, 1922. semina 665.1340. Q
requiring the` use of both hands, as Ain ach case the 'latch-bolt will be returned to normal locked position .by the respective spring v 'in the, structure herein shown in which 5 is the casing of the latch and 'is the cover plate held 1n place by the screw -7 A res ciprocatable bolt Sis provided with a taered end portion 9 vwhich normally pro- ]ects -thruan opening in the end plate 10 land is yieldingly held in this position by an open 4helical sprlng 11. The spring surrounds the shank 12 of the bolt 8.
The part 13 of the bolt formsa shoulder with the shank against which one end of the spring abuts.- A plate 14 is provided with a central perforation thru which the shank 12 freely moves and serves as an abutment for the other end of the spring 11. The late 14 is prevented from moving rearwar y by two projections 15 and 15', but it may be moved slightly forwardly by compressing `the spring 11 to someextent.
'When the bolt- 8 is moved inwardly until the projection 9 is withinthe'casing 5, as shown kin broken lines in Fig. 3, the sprin is compressed and' will return the bolt to ull line position when released.
of the bolt 8 is la cross bar 16. Two tumblers 17-'17, vone on eachside of the bar, have aligning axes and are independently rotatable. The tumbler 17 is rotatable by a key Operatable .part 18 and the tumbler 17 is rotatable by 'the knob 19. -"When either tumbler is rotated less than one-halfrevolution in. either direction, it will retract the-bolt 8,
as shown in'broken linesl in Fig. v3, and hold the ybolt in'retracted position, until ithas b een rotated slightly in the'i opposite direc- The tumblers are substantially the saine ,in form and each tumblerhas ends 19e-19- Fastened to the rear end of theshank 12 will be snapped back'by the spring and the 'tumbler will be thus latched in position with` g g 'the bolt retracted where it will remain until 'the tumbler engaged end has been manually moved in the opposite direction past the aforesaid projection, after which, will move the bolt outwardly.
The'key-operated tumbler 17 is'secured to` a sleeve21 which has a slot y22 to .receive a blade 18 that is. rotatable byy a key 23 for a Yale lock 24 common in latches of this char-y acter.
The knob 19 has a stem 25 that is secured to the'tumble' 17. by which the latter may be rotated.
rIhe latch structure herein `described is of standard type except for the projections 20-20 formed on. th bar 14 and the absence o the two parts commonly usedI to hold the bolty retracted when moved to retracted position by the knob 19. 'f
While I have herein shown anddescribed only a single e bodiment of my invention,
Ait is manifest that changes ma scope of the appended claims.
Aclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters the spring `sprin 2. latch structure having `tumblerhaving two ends normally bearing be made in the form of structure within t e spirit and Having described my invention what I Patent, is
1.A latch structure having a recipro` catable springJpressed bolt; a cross-bar secured to the yrear end of the bolt; a rotatable tumbler having two ends selectively to ena e `the bar` when rotatedto retractrthe bolt, andl a spring-pressed latch-member to engage the other end of the tumbler to yieldingly hold the bolt retracted against the a reciprocatable'bolt; a. spring yielding holdin the bolt extended; a plate mova le axia y of the bolt affording one abutment for the spring; a cross-bar secured to the inner end of the bolt, in rear of the plate; a
against the bar selectively to retract the bolt when rotated and` tion. j
'In testimony scrlbe my name.
whereof I t `hereunto sub- JOHN E. FLOYD.
