The main object of this invention is to provide an improved locking latch which is well adapted for use on doors of automobiles and one which when locked permits free rod tation of the hand piece, thereby rendering it more difiicult to open the door by breaklng the lock.
A further object is to provide a structure having these advantages which is very sun- 1 ple and economical in structure and at the same time attractive in appearance.
Objects relating to details and economies of construction and operation of our invention will appear from the description to fol- 15 low. The invention is defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of our invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

The embodiment of our invention illustrated comprises an elongated hand piece 1 having a barrel or sleeve 2 fixed thereto. An ornamental housing 3 encloses a portion of this sleeve, not covered by the escutcheon plate 4. I

rotatably associated with the inner end of the sleeve 2. This head is provided with a cuplike recess 7, the wall of the recess having a notch 8 therein.
The sleeve 2 is provided with opposed openings 9 and also with an opening 10.
The bolt 11 is provided with a body portion 12 engaged in the recess 7 for sliding movement therein, and also with lugs 13 and 14 which are adapted to coact with the opposed openings 9 in the sleeve so that the bolt is rotated with the sleeve in either position, that is, both in locking and unlocking position.
The bolt has a transverse slot 15 in the top thereof which is engaged by an eccentric pin 16 on the locking unit 17, this locking unit being of the cylinder type. We have not shown details of this lock unit, such details not constituting a part of our invention other than the feature of the eccentric pin and the means for rotatably retaining the unit within the sleeve which means, as illustrated, consists of providing the locking unit with a peripheral groove 18 registering with the opening 10 so that the spring 20 may be engaged in the groove, the locking unit inserted into the sleeve and when the spring is aligned with the opening 10 will spring or snap into the same, thereby retaining the locking unit in position.
' A blade spring 21 is arranged between the casing or housing 3 and the sleeve 2, this spring having an inturned end 23 engaging the bolt and acting to urge it to spindle en gaging or latch unlocking position. The opposite end 24: of the spring is engaged in an opening 25 in the sleeve so that when the housing is in position, the spring is efiect ively supported.
The lock unit illustrated is of the cylinder type exposed in'the face of the hand piece, l212s shown in Fig. 2, to be manipulated by a ey. v I The spring 21 enables the complete turning of the key for unlocking the latch, that is, for re-engaging the hand piece 1 and spindle 2 withoutregard to' the position which the hand piece 1 may occupy at thetime of turning the key. As the lock unit 17 is revolved, the eccentric pin 16 on the same is freed from the slot 15 in the bolt 11 so that the eccentric pin 16 itself is not resisting the urge of the spring 21, wherefore as soon as the hand piece 1 is turned to bring the bolt 11 into alignment with the notch 8 in the spindle head 6, the bolt 11 is actuated by the spring 21 to connect the spindle to the hand piece.
lVe have illustrated and described our improvements in an embodiment which we regard as very satisfactory. We have not attempted to illustrate or describe certain modifications and adaptations which we contemplate as it is believed the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the'art to embodv or adapt our improvements as may be desired.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. The combination of a hand piece provided with a sleeve having opposed openings therein, a latch operating spindle Provided with a head rotatably associated with the inner end of said sleeve, said head having a recess in the end thereof, the recess having a notched wall, a bolt disposed in said recess in said spindle for movement transversely thereof and provided with oppositely projecting lugs coacting with said openings in said sleeve and with a groove dipsosed transversel relative to said lu s one of said lu s y b 7 PD being adapted to engagesaid notch in said spindle'head when the bolt is in latch locking position, a key actuated lock unit rotatable in said sleeve and provided with an eccentric pin engaging said groove in said bolt whereby the 'bolt is actuated upon the rotation of said lock unit, and a spring acting to urge said bolt to latch unlocking position by locking said sleeve and spindle together.
2. The combination of a hand piece provided with a sleeve having opposed openings therein, a latch operating spindle provided with a head rotatably associated with the inner end of said sleeve, said head havin a recess in the end thereof, the recess havlng a notched wall, a bolt disposed in said recess in said spindle for movement transversely thereof and provided with oppositely projecting lugs coacting with said openings in said sleeve and with a groove disposed transversely relative to said lugs, one of said In 5 being adapted to engage said notch in said spindle head when the bolt is in latch unlocking position, and a key actuated locking unit rotatable in said sleeve and provided with an eccentric pin engaging said groove in said bolt whereby the bolt is actuated upon the rotation of said locking unit.
3. The combination of a hand iece provided with a sleeve having oppose openings therein, a latch operating spindle provided with a head rotatably associated with the inner end of said sleeve, a bolt provided with oppositely projecting lugs coacting with said openings in said sleeve and with a groove disposed transversely relative to said lugs said olt being adapted to engage said spindle when 1n one position a key actuated locking unit rotatable in sald sleeve and rovided with an eccentric pin engaging sai groove in said bolt whereby the bolt is actuated upon the rotation of said locking unit, and a spring acting to urge said bolt to latch unlocking positlon by locking said sleeve and spindle together.
4;. The combination of a hand piece provided with a sleeve having opposed openings therein, a spindle rotatably associated with the inner end of said sleeve, a bolt slidable transversely of said sleeve and adapted to engagesa'id spindle when in one position, said bo t belng provided with oppositely projecting lugs coacting with said openings in said sleeve whereby the bolt is rotated with the sleeve, said bolt also having a groove disposed transversely relative to its said lugs, and a key actuated locking unit rotatable in said sleeve and provided with an eccentric pin engaging said groove in said bolt whereby the bolt is actuated upon the rotation of the looking unit.
