Description
April 7, 9 l. s. KEELER COMBINED LOCK AND LATCH Filed June 25, 192 8 INVENTOR Isaac Q5. K229?!- BY f wommys Patented Apr. 7, 1931 UNITED STATES- PATENT: OFFICE ISAAC S. KFZIEILIITR, F GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR '10 KEELER BRASS CO M- 7 PANY, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN umt.
COMBINED LOCK AND LATCH Application filed June 25,
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide a combined lock and latch which is well adapted for automobile doors and the like and one in which the parts are so arranged that when the latch is locked it is very difiicult to open by force or by breaking the parts.
Second, to provide a structure having these advantages in which when the latch is unlocked the haiidle is free and maybe turned round and round.
Third, to provide a structure having these advantages which is very simple in its parts and at the same time very strong and durable. Objects pertaining to details and economies of my invention will definitely appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined in the claim.
A structure embodying the features of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side view of my improved latch partially in longitudinal section on line 11 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 2 is a front view. Fig. 3 is a detail view mainly in central longitudinal section with the parts in locked position.
Fig. 4 is a detail section on line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
- Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the locking In the embodiment illustrated the handpiece 1 is elongated as is common practice in latches for automobile doors. This hand piece is provided with a cylindrical sleeve 2 which'is rotatably supported in the escutcheon plate 3. A finishing housing 4 is provided for the sleeve. The spindle 5 is provided with a head 6 disposed within and rotatably associated with the sleeve. This head 6 is provided with a transverse slot 7 adapted to receive' thebolt 8. The bolt 8 is provided with lugs lug 15'on the bolt, so
1928. Serial No. 287,922.
9 engaging in the longitudinal slots 10 in the sleeve so that the bolt is supported for longitudinal movement in thesleeve but is rotated therewith. The bolt is provided with a cuplike chamber or recess 11 adapted to receive the reduced portion 12 of the locking cylinder or unit 13.
This locking unit is mounted within the sleeve to be actuated by a key and is provided with a cam groove 14 engaged by a r is actuated to lock and unlock the latch, the bolt is disengaged and engaged, respectively, with the spindle.
When the bolt is in locking position shown in Fig. 3 the handpiece 1 is free to turn relative to the spindle so that the door cannot be opened by means of the handpiece. How
' ever, when the bolt is in engaged position shown in Fig. 1 the spindle is turned with the handpiece.
I have not illustrated the details of the locking unit other than the cam feature as such details form no part of this invention, the locking unit being preferably of the tumbler type.
that as the locking mem- My improved combined lock and latch is very simple in its parts and at the same time is strong and effective in preventing the opening of a door by methods sometimes employed of forcibly turning a locked'handle.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: 1
The combination with a rotatably sup ported handpiece provided with a sleevelongitudinally slotted at its end, of a spindle provided with a transversely slotted head ro tatable within said sleeve, a bolt mounted within said sleeve and engaging said slots thereof whereby it is supported for rotative movement with the sleeve and for longitudinal movement therein, permitting its adjustment into and out of engagement with said slot in said spindle, said bolt having a cup like recess in its outer end, a locking unit mounted within said sleeve and provided with a part projecting into said recess in said bolt and having a peripheral spiral cam 5 groove, and :1 lug on said bolt coacting with said groove whereby the bolt is moved into and out of engagement with said spindle by the actuation of said locking unit.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
ISAAC S. ICEELER.
