9 Claims (Cl. 70-146) This invention relates to cylindrical lock sets and, more particularly, to a cylindrical lock set of the type which has a cylinder lock incorporated therein to prevent the-operation thereof.
In conventional lock sets of the type, under consideration,- locking of the lock set is usually accomplished by rotating or otherwise moving a locking button in the interior' knob to energize the locking mechanism incorporated in the lock set. The only way in which the locking button can be released from the inside of the door is by reversing the position of the locking button since engagement of the latch bolt with the strike cannot release the lockingmechanism and the locking-button associated therewith. Therefore, when a person leaves the house momentarily with-the locking button in locked position, inadvertentclosing of the door will result inrthat person being locked out ofthe house.
It is, therefore, an-object of my invention=to provide a cylindrical lock set which includes an: interiorlocking button which is disposable inone of two locking positions; a first position in-which the lock set is locked from the inside but will automatically be released by theturning of the interior knobor the engagement of the latch bolt with the strike, and a second position inwhich the impingement .of the latch bolt on the strike will not release the locking button or the locking mechanismtoperated thereby Thus, the first position can be'used for temporary locking and the second position for prolonged locking of the lock set. Therefore, ifsav person leaves the house temporarily, with the locking button in the first position, the impingementof the latch bolt on the strike will'release the locking mechanism and .the locking button associated therewith to prevent inadvertent locking of the person out of his home. On. the other hand, if he intends to leave the house and wishes the doorto lock behind him, he movesthelo'cking button into the second position in which it will not be released by the closing of thedoor. t
Another object of my invention is the provision of a lock set of; the aforementioned character wherein the locking button is moved into the first locking position by merely pushing it inwardly in the interior knob and into the secondposition by turning it in the interior. knob. T herefore,.the button cannot be inadvertently moved into the second position.
' An additional object of my invention is thev provision,
in a lock set of the aforementioned character; of a locking button'which is movable into a first locking position in which it is retained by the action of a locking mechanism energizable thereby, or a second position in which it isv retained by detent means preventing its release from said second, position despite the momentary release ofsaid locking mechanism.
Another problem encountered in the design of cylindrical lock sets of the character under consideration is the necessity of incorporating therein means of sufficientstructural rigidity and strength to resist unauthorized attempts to break or force open the lock set. In cylindrical lock sets of the type under consideration herein, it is conventional to incorporate a retractor bar and exterior spindle when said locking bar is dis 5 plate in member which has its forward end secured in operative relationship with a latch bolt extension, the retractor member being designed to retract the latch bolt to free the latch bolt from a striker plate in which it is located and thus to free the door in which the cylindrical lock set is mounted. It is also conventional practice to provide a plurality of actuators for the retractor, said w by the individual actuators since it is generally not feasible to provide, within the restricted confines of the lock set housings, actuators of identical size and stroke. Therefore, in conventional lock sets a uniform length of retracting stroke is not attained, with the result that j the design of the lock sets must be governed by the maximum stroke achievable with the actuator having the smallest retracting stroke.
Another object of my invention is the provision, in a cylindrical lock set, of a retractor and actuator means -therefor which permit a substantially identical stroke to be achieved despite a diiference in the size and location of the individual actuators. has been attained by the provision on the retractor of inclined cam faces engageable by the individual actuators and byso designing the actuators that the actuator with the smallest stroke engages the highest portions of the cam faces, thus permitting the smallest of the actuators to retract the retractor a distance substantially 4 the key-receiving plug of the cylinder lock in a proper orientation.
A further object of my invention is the PIOVISIOIL'HI a cylindrical lock set, of an exterior, knob mounting spindle which is operatively connected to the exterior actuator incorporated therein by means of a sliding connection, said sliding connection permitting the exterior spindle to, be readily disconnected from the exterior actuator, thus permitting the rotation of the knob mounted on the spindle and the cylinder lock mounted therein by 180 'to reorient the cylinder lock and the key-receiving plug mounted therein. By the provision of the simple sliding connection between the exterior spindle and the exterior actuator, I have eliminated the necessity for com plicated connecting mechanisms and also eliminated the time-consuming processes generally necessary for adapting conventional cylindrical lock sets todoors of dilferent hand. 1 I
Another object of my invention is the provision, in a cylindrical lock set of the aforementioned character, of an exterior spindle mounting an exterior knob having a cylinder lock located therein, said exterior spindle being provided with engagement means adapted to receive in sliding engagement a connector mounted upon the asso-- ciated end of the exterior actuator to permit the exterior 'spindleto be readily dismounted from the exterior actuator and rotated through, an arc of 180 and to be readily reinstalled upon the exterior actuator by means of the connector secured to the end thereof. l
An additional object of my invention is the provision, in a cylindrical lock set of the aforementioned character, of an exterior spindle whichis provided with elongated slots extending longitudinally thereof and an exterior actuator having a torque washer mounted on an end thereof'adjacent the end of the exterior spindle, sald torque washer being provided with radiating Lbosses slidably receivable in said slots to provide a sliding, torquetransmitting connection between the exterior spindle and This desirable result equal to the distance achieved by the use of the largest 7 of the actuators which is in engagement with the lowest portions of the inclined cam faces. 7 An additional object of my invention'is the provision,
in a lock set of the aforementioned character, of actuator means constituted by cam actuators or followers of progressively smaller radii, said actuators or followers having their edges engageable with the aforesaid inclined f cam faces on the retractor and progressively engaging higher portions of the cam faces on the retractor as the radii thereof decrease.
Another problem commonly encountered in the installation of cylindrical lock sets of the characterlunder consideration is that of installing such lock sets in doors of different hand. When such installations are made, it is necessary to reverse the position of the cylinder lock so that thejkey receiving opening inthe plug of the cylinder lock may be orientated in the proper In order to solve this problem, lock sets have been provided with the component cylinder locks thereof oriented in different positions to'permit them to'jbe J mounted in doors'of diiferent hand.-- Other lock sets havebeenprovided whereby it is necessary'to dismount the cylinder lock from its mounting in the lock set and rotate it 180 to permit the lock set to be installed with c the exterior actuator. Therefore, the-exterior spindle can be r'eadliy dismounted from the exterioriactuator to permit the aforesaid rotation thereof to-properly orient the key-receiving 'plug of the cylinder-lock. V 7
Since the thickness of doors on which cylindrical lock sets are customarily installed varies, Within prescribed limits, it is desirable to provide. a cylindrical lock set which incorporates means permitting 'it to be mounted in doors or different thickness. Inlconventional'lock sets, the means for accommodating the lock set housings to doors of diiferent thickness usually includes cooperating threaded portions on thehousings and rosettes to permit .the rosettes to be. threaded inwardly or, outwardly as the thickness of the "door necessitates. Obviously, such means of adjustment involves expensive manufacturing treatment of the housings and their associated rosettes. f t I Another object of my invention is: the provision of an adjustable mounting means for a cylindrical lock set housing, said' adjustable mounting means' being constituted by stud means mounted on the exterior rosette plate and extending through the housing into operative engagement with mounting screws secured in, the interior rosette plate. Therefore, it is possible to adjust the housing to doors of different thickness :by merely adjusting. the mounting screws or providing diiferent lengths of mounting. screws for operative relationship with the stud means. j t t. 1
Another object of my invention is the provision of a sliding-connection between the exterior spindle-and exterior actuator and a sliding connection between the cylinderlock and the lock actuatorwhich permits adjustment of'the lock set housing to doors of difierent thickness without any modification of these various elementsof the lock set construction. Conventional cylindrical lock set constructions "-frequently incorporate relatively complex exterior knob and spindle combinations designed to adequately support the cylinder lock associated therewith ,in=-the. interior. ofi the knob or spindle and to facilitate the dismounting of the cylinder lock. from the knob or spindle when .theioccasion. for the replacement thereof arlses. Such. conventional constructions frequently entail substantial disassembly of the component. portions of the lock set construction to free the cylinder lock from en'ga'gementnwith the knob or spindle in which it is located, or are so readily accessible that the cylinder lock can be easily dismounted by unauthorized persons topermit the operation of a locked lock set.-
It is, therefore, another object ofmy invention to provide a cylindrical lock set' construction: which includes a hollow exterior knob, said exterior knob being provided with a centrally located opening" therein and being mounted on an elongatedtubular' spindle in which is disposed a cylinder lock, one end of the cylinder lock being supported in the centrally located opening in the knob and the opposite end thereof being supported on supporting means positively engageable with the aforesaid spindle to prevent the dislocation of the cylinder look from the exterior of the lock set.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a cylinder lock support construction which includes a hollow exterior knob, said knob having a centrally located opening therein and being mounted upon an elongated, tubular spindle, the cylinder lockhaving one end. disposed in and supported in said centrally located opening and its opposite end supported onv supporting means engageable with detent means provided by theaforesaid spindle.
An additional object of my invention is the provision ofa cylinder lock supporting structure of the aforementioned character wherein the supporting means forsaid cylinder lock is constituted by a spring. biased supporting washer which encompasses the periphery of the cylinder lock and the spring biasing the aforementioned washer is in positive engagement with the detent means provided in the elongated spindle. p I
A further object of my invention is the provision of a cylinder lock supporting structure of the aforementioned character in which'the extreme inner end of the spindle is retained by fastening means to prevent removal of said spindle, said fastening means being readily accessible from the interior of the lock set in 'which the cylindersupporting construction is incorporated to'permit the spindle to be dismounted and access to be had tothe cylinderlock supporting means and thus to facilitate the dismountingof the cylinder. lock from the interior of the spindle and the knob in which it is mounted.
A further object of my invention is the provision of means formounting the cylinder lock blade in the plug of said lock which also acts to prevent withdrawal-"of the plug from the lock from the exterior end, thereof. H

Referring to the drawings, and particularly to Figs. 1-3, 6, and 10-12 thereof, I show a cylindrical lock set .on the broken 10 constructed in accordance with my invention and disposable in operative relationship with a door 11, said cylindrical lock set being operatively connected to a latch bolt housing 12 located ina longitudinalwbore-l t in the edge of the door 11 and-including a cylindrical lock set housing 16 disposed in a transverse bore 17 pro-' vided in the door 11. r
Projecting from the outermost end of the latch bolt housing 12 is a latch bolt IQ-Which-has mounted thereupon a latch bolt extension 21, the innermost end-of which is shown as extending from the innermost end of the latch bolt housing 12, asbest shown'in'Figs. 1 and 6 of the drawings. Since the present disclosure is concerned, primarily, with inventionsrelating to the cylindrical lock set '19, it will not be necessary to consider in detail the construction of the latch bolt housing 12 or the latch bolt retracting elements incorporated therein.
Located in the transverse bore 17 in the door 11, and constituting a portion of the cylindrical lock set housing 16, is a substantially cylindrical housing member 23 formed from sheet metal or similar material and having provided upon the exterior side thereof an integral tubular boss 25. It should be understood that, in using the words exterior and interior, reference is made to the exterior and interior sides of the door 11. and. that these words are used in a descriptive sense only and are not to be taken in a limiting connotation.
The cylindrical housing member 23 is provided with a peripheral wall 28' which defines a cylindrical cavity 27' I for the reception of variousportions of the latch actuatormechanism. Provided in the peripheral wall 28 is an:
inwardly extending integral bosswhich'constitutes a spring seat 29, for a purpose which will be described'in greaterdetail below. An opening 31 is formed in the peripheral purpose which will be described in greater detail below.
Also formed in the back wall 35, of the cylindrical housing member 23 are stud receiving openings 39. Formed integrally with the peripheral wall 28 is an annular mounting flange 41 which serves to secure the cylindricalhousing member 23 within the transverse bore 17 in a manner which will be described in greater detail below.
jDisposed within the cylindrical cavity 27 is a retractor guide member 44, best shown in Figs. 1, 2, 6, and of the drawings, said guide member being formed of sheet metal'and including a vertical side wall 45, said side wall thereof upper and lower guide and mounting armsv 47 and 49, respectively. The side wall 45 of the retractor guide member 44 has a centrally located opening 51 therehaving integrally formed with the upper and lower edges in which is registerable with the bore provided in the laterally extending tubular boss on the cylindrical housing member 23. Mounting tabs 53 are formed upon the opposite ends of the side wall 45 of the retractor guide member 44 and are insertable through the mounting holes 37 provided in the back wall 35 of the cylindrical housing member 23, said mounting tabs, after their 1 insertion into the mounting holes 37, being staked, as best shown in Fig. l of the drawings, to retain the retractor guide member 44 in operative relationship with the cylindrical housing member 23.
The upper and lower guide and mounting arms 47 and 49, respectively, of the retractor guide member 44 have bifurcated mounting lugs 55 formed integrally on the lateral edges thereof, said mounting lugs being undercut,
as at 57, to provide mounting recesses 59 in the upper j and lower guide and mounting arms 47 and 49, respectively.
Lateral guide means 60, best shown in Figs. '13 and 11 of the drawings, is disposable in operative relationship with the retractor guide member 44 and is constituted by a substantially rectangular plate 63 formed from relatively heavy gage sheet steel, saidrectangular plate being 1 provided on the upper and lower edges thereof with shoulders 65, said shoulders being engageable with the mounting recesses 59 in the upper and lower mounting arms 47 and 49, respectively, to secure the substantially rectangular plate 63 in operative engagement with the retractor guide member 44. v
The plate 63 has a centrally located opening 67 provided therein and has a laterally extending, torsion-resisting member 69 formed integrally therewith and extending normally to the plane thereof, said laterally extending torsion-resisting member being constituted by an elongated, rigid arm 70. A slot 71 which communicates with the centrally located opening 67 is provided in the substantially rectangular plate 63.

Juxtaposed to the exterior face 81 of the doorll is a circular, exterior rosette plate 82, said rosette plate having provided thereupon an integral, centrally located tubular boss 83 and serving to support an exterior rosette 85 having a centrally located opening 87 therein, as best shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings.
Secnred inmounting holes 89 in the exterior rosette plate 82, asbest shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, are clamping studs 90-. which extend through the openings 39 in the rear wall 35 of the cylindrical housing member 23 and have their inner ends juxtaposed to the openings 79 in the bearing plate 72. Screw receiving openings 91 are provided in an interior rosette plate 92 disposed in contiguity to the interior face 93 of the door 11. Clamping screws 95 are inserted through the openings 91 in the interior rosette plate 92 and the openings 79 in the plate 72 to engage threaded bores, not shown, in the ends of the clamping studs 90 and secure the exterior rosette plate 82 andthe interior rosette plate 92 in operative relationship with each other and thus to mount the cylindrical lock set housing 16 in the transverse bore 17 in the door 11. V
It'will be noted that by mere adjustment of the clamping screws 95, it is possible to accommodate the lock set to doors of different thickness. Furthermore, clampingscrews of different lengths can be utilized with doors of widely different thicknesses,
The interior rosette platev 92 is provided with a laterally .extending'tubular boss 97 formed integrally therewith and extending into an interior rosette 99 which is .mounted uponthe interior rosette plate 92 and provided w i th a centrally located opening 101. It should be noted that the interior rosette plate 92 'is provided with a peripheral, annular flange 103'which is juxtaposed in contiguity to the annular flange 41 on the cylindrical housing member 23. H
Furthermore, it should be noted that the interior rosette plate 92 is secured in operative relationship with the cylindrical housing member 23 by means of the mounting lugs on the upper and lower mounting arms 47 and 49 of the retractor guide member 44, said mounting lugs being received in slots, not shown, provided in the interior rosette plate 92. Therefore, the cylindrical housing member 23, together with the component parts thereof and the interior rosette plate 92 secured thereto by the mounting lugs 55, constitutes a unitary structure which can be inserted in the bore 17 and which is main- It should be noted that when the substantially rectangular plate 63 is installed in operative relationship with the retractor guide member 44 by the location of the shoulders in the mounting recess 59,-the mounting lugs 55 extend beyond the side face of the rectangularplate 63 to permit them to be I ally extending positioning arms which are receivable between the mounting lugs 55, vertical mounting arms 77 tained in said bore by the. operative connection constituted by the clamping studs and clamping screws which vsecure the interior and'exterior rosette plates 92 and ,82 inoperative relationship with each other. The cylindrical lock set housing 16 is thus constituted by the cylindrical housing member 23, the retractor guide mem ber 44, the lateral guide means 60, the cruciform plate 72 and the interior rosette plate 92. It should be understood that the enumeration of the elements constituting the housing 16 should not be taken in alimiting sense, since changes in the shape or mode of fastening these elements may be made without departing from the spirit and teaching of the invention.
Disposed in sliding relationship withthe retractor guide member 44 and, more particularly, with the side wall 45, the upper and lower mounting arms 47 and 49 thereof and the lateral guide means 60 secured thereto, is a retractor 106, best shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, 6, and 13 of the drawings. The retractor 106 includes a body portion 107 from the forward portion of which extend downwardly bent arms 109 for, engaging the bolt extension 21, as best shown in Figs. 1 and'6 of the drawings.
In defining the highest and lowest portions of the cam faces 113, the lowest portions are considered to be those portions offthe'camtaces immediately adjacent the top andbottom' plates-of theretractor'6 asviewed in Fig. 6 of the drawings, while the highestportions of the cam faces 113 are considered to be those immediately adjacent the opening 115 between said cam faces.- The outer edges ofthe cam faces 113' are also to be considered those edged immediately adjacent the top and bottom plates of the retractor 106 and the inner edges are those adjacent the centrally located opening.
An intermediate wall 111 is provided on the body portion 107 and is constituted by' apair of inclined cam faces 113- which have disposed intermediate the highest portions thereof and formed in the intermediate wall 111 a transverse-opening 115.
Locatedinternallyof the retractor 106'isa detent plate 117, best shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 14 of the drawings, said detent plate having a detent tab 119 formed-integrally therewith which is insertable in the opening 115 in the body portion 107 of the retractor 106 and which projects through the. opening 115, for a purpose which will be described in greater detail below. Formed integrally with the detent plate 117 is an annular spring seat 121, said seat receiving the end of a compression spring 123 whose opposite end is seated upon the spring seat 29 provided on the peripheral wall 28 of'the cylindrical housing member 23; The spring 123 thus serves both to move the retractor 106 into its outermost position in the interior of the retractor guide member 44 and to project the detent tab 119 on the detent plate 117 through the opening 115 in the retractor 106 while maintaining the detent plate in operative relationship with said'retractor.
Located centrally of the intermediate wall 111 and between the highest points on the inclined cam faces 113 is a centering boss 125 on the retractor 106.
An interior spindle 130, Figs. 1 and 17, constituted by' an elongated, tubular cam sleeve 131 projectsfrom the housing member 23 through the opening 67 in the lateral guide means 60, the opening 73 in the bearing plate 72 and the tubular boss 97 on the interior rosette plate 92 and the centrally located opening 101 in the interior rosette 99 A shoulder 132 on the sleeve 131 engages a contiguous portion of the bearing plate 72.

Also provided on the cam sleeve 131 are inwardly extending, integral tabs 139, best shown in Figs. 1-3 and 17 of the drawings, said tabs co-operating'to form a spring seat intermediate the endsof the cam sleeve 131. A circular detent receiving opening 141 is formed in the wall of the cam sleeve 131 and an elongated, axially oriented slot 143 is also formed therein, said slot terminating at its outermost end'in a cam slot 145.
Mounted on the outermost end of the spindle 130 is is a hollow interior knob 146, said knob being provided with an integral cylindrical shank 147- encompassing the periphery'of the spindle 130 and being provided with. an inwardly directed prong 149' engageable with the elongated axial slot 143 inthe spindle 130 to prevent relative rotation between said spindle and said knob. Also provided to prevent relative rotationbetween the spindle and the knob and to permit the knob to be released from the end of said spindle, is a detent button 151 which is mounted upon an annular spring 153 lo eated interiorly ofthe s'pindle130, said button extendingthrough the detent opening 141 in the wall of the spindle and into engagement with a juxtaposed opening provided in the cylindrical: shank: 147 of the knob 146.
Formed integrally with. the inner end of the spindle 130'constituted by the elongated interioricam sleeve131 is an arcuateretractor actuator or cam. member 155, the opposite edges of which are, as. best: shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings, e'ngageable with the'lowest portions of the cam faces 113 provided intermediate the ends of the retractor 106.. Therefore, when the knob 146 isrotated to cause the concomitant rotation of the spindle simultaneous rotation of the cam actuator- 1-55- will occur causing the cam actuator to engage a respective cam face 113' on the retractor 106 to urge the retractor 106' rearwardly in the interior of the guide member 44 against the bias of the compression spring 123, thus causing the arms109'of the retractor 106 to draw the latch bolt extension 21 inwardly and retra'ct th'e latch bolt 19.
Located within thetubular spindle 130 and havingits outermost end projecting through a centrally located opening 157 in the knob 146 is a turn button 159- designed to control the actuation of an elongated locking bar 160, said locking bar being designed to prevent the operation of the retractor'106 by preventing rotation of the cam actuator 217 and to thus prevent retraction Y of the latch bolt 19. The locking bar 160 is mounted in the turn button 159 by means of a mounting washer 163, best shown in Figs. l-3 and 16 of the drawings. The mounting washer 163 is provided with radial prongs 165 and 167 which engage mating notches in the skirt of the turn button 159, as best shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, to prevent relative rotation between the washer 163 and the turn button 159. It will be noted that the radial prong 167 extends. beyond the confines of the skirt of the turn button 159 and is engaged in the cam slot145 provided in the elongated cam sleeve 131 which constitutes the spindle 130 Formed centrally of the mounting washer 163 is a substantially elliptical opening169. It should also be noted that the mounting washer 163 is restrained against displacement from the skirt of the turn button 1591because the lower extremity of said skirt is bent over to prevent such displacement of the washer 163.
The locking bar 160 is provided with an elongated shank 171 having a head member 173 upon one. end thereof which defines a slot 175 whose width is equivalent to the thickness of the mounting washer 163. The locking bar 160 is mounted on the mounting washer 163 by the insertion of the head 173 of saidlocking bar through the opening 169 in said mounting washer, the washer being engaged in the slot 175 provided in the end of the shank 171 of the locking bar 160.
, The shank 171 of the locking bar 160 is provided with an intermediate offset portion 176, said intermediate portion incorporating integrally formed locating and v engaging arms 177 which partially encompass the elongated rigid arm 70 constituting the laterally extending,
torsion-resisting member 69 mounted on the lateral, guide means 60. The intermediate portion 176 of the locking bar is also provided with projections or side bars 179 at the lateral edges thereof, said side bars being formed therein by coining or other conventional forming processes.
Formed integrally with the extreme inner end of the shank 171 of the locking bar 160 is a detent tongue 181, said tongue being engageable with the detent tab 119 provided on the detent plate 117 located in the retractor 106. A spring 183 is interposed between the seat con stituted by the tabs 139 on the interior of the sleeve 131 and the mounting washer 163 for the locking bar 160,

To locate the turn button 159 in the first, locking posi- -tion, it is merely pushed inwardly in the interior knob 146 to urge the locking bar 160 inwardlyinto a position in which the detent tongue 181 thereupon rides over the detent tab 119 and engages the same. Therefore, the turn button 159 is retained in the first, locking position by the engagement of the detent tongue 181 on the locking bar 160 with the detent tab 119. Thus, if the interior 1 .knob 146 is rotated to rotate the interior carn actuator 155, or the latch bolt 19 engages its associated strike,

On the other hand, when it is intended that the lock set 10 be locked and not released by opening of the door or the closing thereof, the button 159 is moved into its second, locking position by rotating it relative to the knob 146 to move the radially extending prong 167 on the washer 163 downwardly in the cam slot until a dwell portion 185 provided on said cam slot is reached 7 wherein the radially extending prong 167 is engaged and wherein it is retained by the bias of the spring 183.
fThe downward movement of the radially extending prong 167 in the cam slot 145 causes the compression of the spring 183 and corresponding inward movement of the locking bar into a position in which the detent I tongue 181 thereupon rides over the detent tab 119 on position, rotation of the interior knob 146 or impingement of the bolt 19 on its associated strike will not release the tongue 181 permanently from the tab 119. For instance, if the knob 146 is rotated to withdraw the bolt 7 19 and free the door, the tab 119 will be temporarily disengaged from the tongue 181 by the rearward movement of the retractor 106. However, the locking bar 160 Will be maintained in its second locked position because of the engagement of the prong 167 with the dwell portion 185 of the cam slot 145. It should also be noted at this juncture that the locating and supporting arms 177 securely engage the locking bar 160 with the torsion-resisting member 69, thus preventing relative rotation between the torsion-resisting ,member 69 and the locking bar 160, for a purpose which will become apparent upon further consideration of the other aspects of the cylindrical lock set of my invention.
Disposed in operative relationship with the lock set housing '16 and the various components incorporated therein, is an exterior spindle constituted by an elongated, tubular spacer sleeve 191 maintained in sliding relationship with an exterior actuator 193, in a manner to be described in greater detail below. The inner end or" the spacer sleeve 191 is located in the tubular boss 83 on the exterior rosette plate 82 and has formed therein oppositely disposed detent openings 195, best shown in Figs. 1 and 7 of the drawings. The oppositely disposed, vertically oriented legs 197 of a U-shaped retain'er spring 198 are disposed in the detent openings and also, together with the bightof the spring formed integrally therewith, engage the inner edge of a retainer collar 201 which is located in the tubular boss 83 of the exterior rosette plate 82 and has its outer edge in engagement with a radial flange 203 formed integrally Therefore, the spacer sleeve 191 is restrained against displacement from its operative relationship with the exterior rosette plate 82 by means of the retaining collar 201 and the retainer spring 198 associated therewith and engaging the detent openings'195 in the inner end of the spacer sleeve 191.
Mounted upon and encompassing theouter portion of the spacer sleeve 191 is a hollow exterior knob 204, said knob having a cylindrical shank 205 formed integrally therewith which mounts said knobon said spacer sleeve. A pair of oppositely disposed, integral, inwardly. directed detent prongs 207 is formed on the shank 205 ofthe knob 204, said prongs engaging detent openings 209 provided in the wall of the spacer sleeve 191. Therefore, the'knob 204 is retained against outward displacement out of engagement with the spacer sleeve 191 and is also fastened thereto against relative rotation so that the rotation of theknob 204 causes concomitant rotation of the spacer sleeve 191 in the tubular boss 83 on the exterior rosette plate 82. I
A pair of oppositely disposed, axial slots 211 and 213 is formed in the wall of the spacer sleeve 191, as best shown in Figs. 2, 7, and 8 of the drawings, the slot 211 terminating inwardly of the outer portion of the sleeve 191 while the slot 213 extends the entire length of said being most clearly shown in Figs. 1-3, 6 and 1 8 of the drawings and including a substantially cylindrical barrel portion 215 having its outer end disposed in telescoping relationship with the inner-end of the sleeve 191.. The
barrel. portion 215 of the exterior actuator 193 has integrally formed therewith a cam actuator or blade217 of arcuate'cross-sectional configuration.
As can be most clearly seen froma consideration of Fig.6 of the drawings, the cam actuator 217' is formed on'a smaller radius than the interior actuator 155, but has its opposite edges engageable with higher portions of the cam faces 113 on the retractor 106, thus permitting the rotation of th'e'exterior actuator to accomplish a retractor stroke of substantially the same length as the retractorstroke accomplished by the energization of the larger interior'cam actuator 155. It will be noted that a shoulder 218 is formed on the exterior actuator .193 between the barrel portion 215 and the cam actuator portion 217 thereof, said'shoulder, as best shown inFig 1 of the drawings, overlying an'edge of the opening" 51in. the

The torque transmitting member 220' and the slots 2 11 and 213 in the spacer sleeve 191 thusiprovide a sliding connection between the spacer sleeve 1 91; and the exterior actuator 193; to permit the disengagement of the spacer sleeve 191 from the exterior actuator 193 when it is necessary to install the cylindrical lock set in doors of ditferenflhand. The necessity for disconnecting the spacer sleeve 191 from the exterior actuator 193 arises out of the fact that when the cylindrical lockset 10 must be installed in a door of-difierent hand from that in which it was originally designed to be installed, the cylindrical lockset housing 16 thereof must be rotated about its axis 180* to juxtapose the arms 109 of the retractor 106 to the extension of the latchbolt with which it is associated. Whensuch rotation of the cylindrical lockset housing 16 occurs, the plug 233 of the cylinder lock is also rotated, thus cau sing it to be invertedand presenting the key slot in an inverted'position wherein it will notreceive the key when the key is held in its customary orientation. Ithas been customaryin the past to solve the problem of the orientation of the key slotby providing cylindrical lock sets with the cylinder'locks oriented for rightand left-hand'use or by providing;rela tively complex connectionsbetween the cylinder lock and the associated knob and spindle structure which would permit rotation of the cylinder lock with reference to the aforesaid structure to permit the key slot in the plug to be properly orientedwith respect to the latch.
By the provision of the sliding connection between the spacer sleeve 191 and the exterior actuator- 193 of the spindle 1900f thecylindrical lock set 10 of-my invention, it is feasible to instantaneously disconnect the spacer sleeve 191 from the end of the exterior actuator 193 to rotate'the spacer sleeve19-1 and the cylinder lock 230 located therein -l80"-to properly orient'thekey slot in the plug 233 of said cylinder lock in the properdirection.
Thus, when it is desired to change the orientation of the cylinder lock 230, it is merelynece'ssary to disengage the spacer sleeve 19 1'from the end of theexterior actuator 193- by. disengaging said 'sleevefrom the torquetransmitting member 220 witha-slidingmovement. In this simple manner the entire knob and cylinder'lock assembly is freed from its operative connection with the member 220 to permit it to be rotated l80 to reorient the cylinder lock 230. The reinstallation of the-sleeve 191 and its associated-components on the torque-transmitting member 220 is accomplished with equal facility.
It should be noted that thetorque transmitting member 220 isprovide d with an axial, centrally located bore 229 therein, for a purposewhich will be described in greater detail below.
Disposed within the interior of the outer portion of the sleeve 191 and in operative'relationship with the knob 204 is the cylinder lock 230, said lock including a housing 231 mounting a cylindrical plug 233 which is rotatable therein. A tumbler enclosure 235 is formed integrally with the cylinder lock housing 231' and, as best shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, is receivable in the elongated slot 213 provided in the sleeve 191. Therefore, relative rotation between the sleeve 191 and the lock 230 is preventedby'the engagement ofthe tumbler enclosure 235-with the slot 213 in said sleeve.
The forward end of the plug 233 is located in an opening 239 in=the knob 204, contiguous portions of the cylinder housing 231 engaging the peripheral edge of the opening to prevent the displacement of said cylinder housing from the knob 204. The inner end of the cylinder housing is supported in spaced relation with the interior wall of the sleeve 191 by supporting means indicated generally at 240. The supporting means 240 is, constituted, in part, by an annular support washer 242, best shown in Figs. 1, 2, 9, and 20 of the drawings. The support washer 242 is provided with an axially extending wall defining a bore 243 adapted to receive the body of the cylinder housing 231, said wall being provided with an axially extending slot 245 which receives the tumbler enclosure 235.
Formed integrally on the support washer 242 is a radial flange 247, the peripheral edge of which engages the interior wall of the sleeve 191. To prevent longitudinal movement of the support washer 242 in the sleeve 191, a retainer spring 249 is provided which, as best shown in Fig. 9 of the drawings, is provided with radial loops 251 engageable in oppositely positioned detent openings 253 in the wall of the sleeve 191. When it is desired to dismount the cylinder lock 230 from operative engagement with the sleeve 191 and the knob 204 mounted thereupon, it is merely necessary to disengage the spring 249 from the openings 253 in the sleeve 191 to permit the cylinder housing- 231 and its associated support washer 242. to he slid axially out of engagement with i in Fig. l of the drawings.

The operation of the cylindrical lock set of my invention is as follows:
When the cylindrical lock set is unlocked, the rotation of the interior knob 146 will cause the concomitant rotation of the interior cam actuator 155 to urge the appropriate edge thereof into engagement with the adjacent portion of the inclined cam face 113 to cause-inward movement of the retractor 106 against the bias of the spring 123. In a similar fashion, the rotation of the exterior knob 204 will cause concomitant rotation of the spacer sleeve 191 and the interior actuator 193 operatively connected thereto by means of the torque transmitting member 220, thus causing the engagement of the exterior cam actuator 217 with the adjacent cam face 113.
However, if it is desired to lock the cylindrical lock set 10, the turn button 159 is moved within the interior.
spindle 130 into one of its two locking positions, thus compressing the compression spring 183 and shifting the locking bar 160 to the right from the first, unlocked position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings into the second, locked position shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
When the locking bar 160 is shifted into the second, locked position, the detent tongue 181 thereupon momen- 3 tarily deflects the detent tab 119 on the detent plate 117 inwardly against the bias of the spring 123. However,
as soon as the detent tongue 181 has passed over the de tent tab 119, said detent tab is urged outwardly by the spring 123 into engagement with the detent tongue 181, as best shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
When. the locking bar 160 is located in the second, locked position, the intermediate portion 176 thereof is disposed in overlapping relationship with the exterior cam actuator 217, as best shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, to dispose the lateral edges of the exterior cam actuator 217 in abutting relationship with the side bars 179 provided on the intermediate portion 176 of the locking bar 160. When the locking bar 160 is located in the second, locked position, the rotation of the exterior cam actuator 217 is prevented by the engagement of the lateral edges thereof with the side bars 179 formed out of its first locking position in theknob 146.
Also to be noted is the fact that On the other hand, if the button 159 is disposed in its second locking position, the rotation of the interior knob 146'will retract the retractor 106 but the locking bar 160 will not return to its first unlocked position since the tab 167 associated with the button159 will prevent the return of said locking bar into its first unlocked position because of its engagement with the dwell 185. Therefore, the locking bar 160 will be retained in its locked position and will not be released by the interior knob 146 to unlock the lock set.
However, if an attempt is made to force entry by imposing undue torsional loads on the exterior knob 204, the torsional load imposed upon the knob 204 will be translated through the sleeve 191 and the actuator 193 into the locking bar 160 whence the'torsional load is translated into the torsion-resisting member 69 provided in the cylindrical lock set housing 16 Therefore, rotation of the exterior knob204 and the concomitant rerotation of the traction of the retractor 106 will be prevented since all of the undue torsional load is transmitted into the housing of the cylindrical lock set 10.
I It should also be noted that the provision of the side bars 179 on the intermediate portion 176 of the locking bar 160, as shown in Fig. 4, prevents spreading of the exterior cam actuator 217 and the collapse thereof, thus maintaining the arcuate configuration of the exterior cam actuator 217.
It should also be noted that the sliding relationship between the torque transmitting member 220 on the exterior actuator 193 and the spacer sleeve 191, together with the sliding relationship between the lock actuated blade 256 and the lockactuatable cam actuator 260, permits the adjustment of the lock set-10 in the previously described manner to accommodate the lock set to doors of different thicknesses. 1 For instance, when it is desired to expand the lock set outwardly, it is merely necessary, to slide the sleeve 191 outwardly in relationship to the torque transmitting member 220 which causes concomitant outward movement of -the lock actuated blade 256, with reference to the lockactuatable cam actuator 260 and, more particularly, with respect to the radial lugs 267 provided thereupon. In this manner adjustment of the .lock set 10 to doors of dilferentythicknesses can be accomplished without radical modificationof the, components of the '-lock set 10 and with a minimal amount of adjustment of 190 by the knob 204 mounted thereupon is prevented and the retraction of the latch bolt 19 cannot be accomplished.
. However, if a key is inserted in the cylinder lock 230, the blade 256 is rotated to cause the concomitant rotation of the lock actuatable cam actuator 260 to cause inward movement of the retractor 106, thus permitting retraction of the bolt 19 and the simultaneous disengagement of the locking tongue 181 of the locking bar 160 from the locking tab 119 on the retractor 106 and permitting the locking bar to be urged outwardly by the action of the compression spring 183 into the first, unlocked position, if the button 159 is in the first locking position.
On the other hand, if the button 159 is in the second locked position, the retractor 106 will be urged rearwardly by the cam actuator 260 but the locking button 159 will maintain the locking bar 160 in the second lockedposition until it is rotated in the knob 146 to release it from the dwell portion 185 of the cam slot 145.
If it is desired to unlock the locked lock set from the said components. This is a very important feature of my 111V6I1tlOlIL. v
Although I have shown .my invention as disclosed in detail in a particular mechanical embodiment, it is obvious that changes can be made in the specific details of the constructionof thev lock set disclosed without departing from the spirit'of the claims appended hereto.
I claim as my invention: 1 1.v In a cylinderlock mounting, the, combination of: a
. spindle, said spindle having an elongated slot therein and first and second pairs of openings formed, intermediate the ends thereof; a knob mounted 'on the end of said spindle, said knob having detent means thereupon engageable with one of said pairs of openings and a centrally located opening therein; a cylinder lock located within said slot in said spindle and having one end supported in said opening; and means for supporting the other end of said cylinder engageable'with the other pair of said openings.
2. In a cylinder lock mounting, the combination of: a spindle, said spindle having an'elongated slot therein and first and second pairs of openings formed intermediate the ends thereof; a knob mounted on the end of said spindle, said knob having detent means thereupon engageable with one of said pairs of openings and a centrally located opening therein; a cylinder lock located within said slot in said spindle and having one end supported in said opening; and means for supporting the other end of said cylinder engageable with the other pair of said openings, said means including a support washer encompassing said cylinder and spring means engageable therewith and with said other pair of openings.
3. In a lock set, the combination of: a housing; adjustable mounting means for said housing for mounting the same in doors of different thickness; an exterior spindle in said housing; an exterior actuator telescopically connected to said spindle; a lock in said exterior spindle; a locking blade connected to said lock; and a lock actuated actuator telescopically connected to said blade to permit simultaneous longitudinal movement of said spindle with respect to said exterior actuator and of said blade with respect to said actuator.
4. In a lock set housing, the combination of: an external housing member; a retractor guide having one side secured to a side wall of said housing member and having top and bottom walls spanning the interior of said housing member; and a guide plate secured to the extremities of said top and bottom walls of said retractor guide and constituting the other side wall thereof, said guide plate having a flat, lateral extension formed integrally therewith and extending outwardly therefrom.
5. In a lock set housing, the combination of: an external housing member; a retractor guide having one side secured to a side wall of said housing member and having top and bottom walls spanning the interior of said housing member; and a guide plate secured to the extremities of said top and bottom walls of said retractor guide and constituting the other side wall thereof, said guide plate having a centrally located opening therein and a lateral extension formed integrally therewith and located centrally of said opening and extending outwardly from said guide plate.
6. In a lock set housing, the combination of: an external housing member; a retractor guide having a vertical side wall secured to a side wall of said member and having top and bottom walls spanning the interior of said housing member, said top and bottom walls having detent means formed integrally therewith; and a guide plate mounted on said detent means, said guide plate having a fiat, lateral extension formed integrally therewith and extending outwardly therefrom.
7. In a lock set, the combination of: a housing; a retractor mounted for longitudinal movement in said housing, said retractor having an intermediate wall constituted by a pair of inclined cams, said cams having the lowest portions thereof immediately adjacent the top and bottom plates of said retractor and having the highest portions thereof adjacent the center of said intermediate wall; a first, semi-circular cam actuator located adjacent said cams with the opposite edges thereof engageable with the lowest portions of said cams and operable by a first knob on said lock set; a second semi-circular cam actuator located within the first cam actuator and having its opposite edges engageable with intermediate portions of said cams and operable by a second knob on said lock set; and a third semi-circular cam actuator disposed within the second cam actuator and having its opposite edges engageable with the highest portions of said earns whereby rotation of said cam actuators will cause substantially equal retractive movement of said retractor.
8. In a lock set: a housing; mounting means for mounting said housing in a door, said mounting means being expansible to accommodate said housing to doors of different thicknesses; an exterior spindle mounted for rotation in said housing; a knob mounted on the outer extremity of said exterior spindle; an exterior actuator telescopically connected to said spindle to permit sliding movement of said spindle on said exterior actuator in accordance with the expansion or contraction of said mounting means; a lock in said knob having a slidable blade extending into said exterior actuator; and a lock actuated actuator telescopically connected to said lock by said blade to accommodate for expansion or contraction of said mounting means.

In a lock set: a housing; mounting means for mount ing said housing in a door, said mounting means being 1 expansible to accommodate said housing to doors of different thicknesses; an exterior spindle in said housing; an exterior knob mounted on the outer extremity of said exterior spindle; an exterior actuator telescopically connected to the inner extremity of said spindle to permit sliding movement of said spindle upon said exterior actuator in accordance with the expansion or contraction of said mounting means; a lock in said knob having a slidable blade extending into said exterior actuator; and an actuator within said exterior actuator by said blade and telescopically connected thereto to permit simultaneous longitudinal movement of said spindle with respect to said exterior actuator and of said blade with respect to said actuator.
