Claims. (Cl. l0-145) My present invention relates to a door lock, more particularly adapted for outside doors, thou not limited to such use.
One of the principal objects of this invention is to provide a lock having a novelty constructed night-lock feature, that is, one whereby the outer knob or operating member is locked against rotation or operation by a button-actuated or similar mechanism in association with the inner knob.
An important object of this invention is the provision of a novel and simple detent within the lock which is normally held in a neutral or inoperative position, but which may be shifted into an outer knob rotation-locking position from the inside of the door, and in which the detent is held latched in the latter position by a spring means, and particularly the spring means employed in normal ejection of the looking bolt to locking position.
Another important object of this invention is to provide a novel and siniple spindle construction in combination with such outer knob rotation-locking detent whereby the outer knob may be readily released for rotation and the bolt Withdrawn.
A further important object of this invention is to provide novel and simple means of securing a spindle or spindle means to the outer knob and mounting the same on a lock housing or an esc'utcheon plate.
With these and other objects in view, as will appear hereinafter, l have devised a door lock having certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts and portions, as will be hereinafter described in detail, and particularly set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the characters of reference thereon, which form a part of this application, in which:

My door lock in a preferred form, as shown in the drawings, is arranged in three separate units or assemblies, which are hereinafter referred to as the bolt or latch assembly A, the outer door knob unit i3, and the inner door knob unit C. They are thus arranged so that they may be readily mounted and assembled within the door D.
The door is provided with a horizontal bore D1 extending inwardly from its outer edge for receiving and locating the bolt or latch assembly A. The housing I of the bolt cr latch assembly is provided at its outer end with a plate 2 which is adapted to be positioned in a recess D2 at the outer end of the bore D1. The plate il may be secured in this recess by screws 3. The door has a transverse bore D3 for receiving and locating the spindle housing or cage il, or the principal mechanism of the lock, as will be hereinafter described.
This housing or cage il fits into the bore D3 from the outer side of the door, and it has at one side a longitudinal slot formed between the ledges ia which are adapted to t into a pair of parallel slots la at the upper and lower sides of the inner end oi the bolt housing i, for locking the cage il with respect to the housing E. These ledges lia may slide into the slots Ia from the outer side of the door. The cage il has an escuteheon plate i2 at its outer side which is positioned against the outer side or the door. The outer knob I3 has an inwardly and axially extending hub it which is rotatably mounted withu in the escutcheon plate i2 and is axially retained with respect to the escutoheon plate by means to be described hereinafter, and particularly as shown in Figs. 1, 5, and 7. This hub i is subv stantially in the form of and will be hereinafter referred to as a ferrule.
The inner knob unit C comprises a knob 2I having a hub tin. From the inner end of the hub axially and non-rotatably extends an inner spindle 2173. The hub extends into and is rotatably mounted on an inner escuteheon plate 23 which is positioned against the inner side of the door D and is secured to the inner end of the cage II by screws 2li.
In the housing I of the bolt or latch assembly A is mounted a bolt and a bolt-actuating member 5, the former extending beyond the plate 2 of the bolt housing I and the latter beyond the inner end thereof. The bolt and actuating member 5 are so arranged that as the actuating member 5 is forced outwardly the bolt is drawn inwardly, such reverse movement being effected by a rocker 6. Both of these members are forced outwardly and in opposite directions from the housing I by means of a spring T. The construction o the bolt unit or assembly is more specifically illustrated and described in my co pending patent application, Serial No. 608,160, now Patent Number 2,544,959, issued March 13, 1951.
The inner end of the actuating member 5 has anges or ears 5a and 5b which extend laterally in opposite directions, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, for both restricting and facilitating the outward forcing of the actuating member 5 and the withdrawing of the bolt ll.
The outer knob unit B, which is best illustrated in Figs. 1, 6, and '7, carries two spindles, spindle member i5 and lock-operated spindle IG, the former being non-rotatable with respect to the outer knob I3 and the latter being located coaxial therewith and rotatable relative thereto and to the outer knob. Both spindles are tubular, the outside of the inner fitting substantially within the bore of the outer. The outer spindle extend substantially through the cage H while the inner or lock-operated spindle extends through the axial portion of the inner knob 2i.
The inner end of the hub I4 is rotatable within the escutcheon plate I2, the inner end of the hub engaging the outer side of a shoulder I2El provided by disc member I2b forming the core of the escutcheon plate and also formed as a flange at the outer wall ci the cage I l. The tubular spinw die It extends into the hub from and through the inner side of the disc member lib of the escutcheon plate, the spindle having lugs I5a for engaging the inner face of the disc member to hold the outer knob in position.
The spindle i5 has a longitudinal groove I5 for receiving a key i411 formed by pressing an ear inwardly *from the hub. The groove has a pocket or recess IEC, as shown in Figs. 9 and IO. When the spindle is inserted into the hub, a key UlfL at the inner side of the hub slides into the groove I50, thereby aligning the knob with the spindle. The spindle is' then rotated clockwise causing the key It@ to enter the recess I5, The spindle is prevented from rotating by driving a separate key i7 into the inner end of the groove |51j with the outer end of the key into a notch |411 at the inner end of the hub I4. The retention of the key II is facilitated by thev disc member l2", as indicated in Fig. 5.
The inner end of the spindle I5 has a portion of semi-annular cross-section, formingv a bolt operating or ejecting portion I5d, either of the opposite edges of which may engage the flanges 5a and 5b for forcing the actuating member 5 outwardly and withdrawing the bolt 4.
The spindle I6 has tubular portions Ita and leb at its ends and a portion Hic of semi-annular cross-section intermediate its ends, the latter portion being positioned opposite and cradled within the corresponding semi-annular portion of the spindle I5.
The spindle I6 is locked against axial inward movement with respect to the spindle I5 by a hook portion Iid which slidably engages the edge of the spindle I5 at the end located within the knob.
The spindle I is prevented from moving in the opposite direction by the key-actuated mechanisin or tumbler assembly it located within the hollow outer knob I3 and is positioned be tween the outer end of the spindle IS and the inner side of the outer end of the knob, the outer end of the tumbler assembly extending through a central hole in the knob for locating the outer end of the former.
As shown, the tumbler assembly I8 has a narrow laterally extended portion isa which extends into a longitudinal slot l5e in the outer end of the spindle i5, thus preventing rotation of the tumbler assembly. The latter also has a longitudinally extending barrel lSb having a flat inner end, as shown in Figs. 6 and 8, which extends into a transverse slot le at the outer end of the spindle I6. When the key K, inserted into the outer end of the barrel ISD, is turned, the spindle is rotated, and causing one of the edges of the semi-annular portion to engage and force outwardly the ilanges 5a and 5b of the boltactu ating member 5 and withdraw the bolt.
Within the inner spindle I6 is located the long detent it. It has transverse legs i9@ and I?b at its opposite ends, the former beincr adapted to be shifted into a slot I5! of the spindle I5 and a slot I2c of the escutoheon plate l2 when the two slots are aligned, to prevent or lock the spindie I5 and outer knob from or against turning.
At the opposite edges of the legs IQa and ISb are lugs lSc and I9d, respectively, which center the detent, the former extending into the inner end of a coil spring 26 and the latter into a detent centering pilot 3i. The spring is located within the tubular portion Iiia of the spindle I5 and bears against the adjacent end of the barrel fab. This spring normally urges the outer knobl'ocking leg I Se inwardly beyond the slots I5I and l2c to allow free rotation of the outer knob.
The pilot 3i is mounted at the inner end of the push button 32, which in turn is mounted at the inner end of the tubular portion Ib of the spindle I6. The pilot SI is coaxial with the push button and axially adjustable with respect thereto, and the push button is axially shiitable within the tubular portion l5. The pilot 3| is secured in axial adjustment with the push button 32 by means of a screw 33, the head portion of which extendsv through a longitudinal slot i6 in the tubular portion ISb for guiding the push button in its reciprocal movement.
The push button 32 extends beyond the inner end of the axial portion of the inner knob 2 I, as shown best in Fig. 1, so as to permit the detent I9 to be shifted axially in an outward direction, against the compression of the spring 20, for shifting the locking leg I!)u of the detent I9 into the locking slot E2C at the inner side oi the cscutcheon plate I2, to prevent the outer knob from turning and withdrawing the bolt 4.
On one edge of the detent I9 is provided a cani portion lee which is positioned intermediate the ends thereorn and extends radially outwardly with respect to the axes of the spindles. rlne inner side ci the cam is transverse with respect to the movement of the detent while the forward portion thereof is inclined, as shown best in Tie spindle it has an arcuate lug ith which extends toward the middle or axial portion thereof is adapted to retain the cani itc when shifted outwardly by the detent, the upper or inner portion of the lug 5h be ing inclined and is engaged by the inclined pori tion it@ of the earn, and is constructed to facilim tate the shifting of the detent toward the axial portions of the spindles when the detent is shifted outwardly by the push button Zit will be noted that the cam ille has a rounded forni as is particularly apparent in Figures 2 and (i so that it is readily adapted to slide over the lug lh in either direction oi travel. ln nor mal unlocked position the bolt actuating member is spring pressed by the spring l' from left to right, which action causes the bolt actuating member to be positioned against the edges of the inner spindle 22, the edges of the bolt operating portion Std of the tubular spindle it?, the edges of the semi-annular portion 16C of the spindle it, and the midportion of the detent it. This relationship is best illustrated in Fig-- When the push button is depressed, the cani is@ slides over the lug ith, the detent being permitted a slight movement against spring essure on the bolt actuator 5, until the earn reaches the position shown in Figure 2, in which position it is retained by continued spring pressure through the bolt actuator t against the detent. In this position the locking lug i9 falls into locking position in the looking slot E2C of the escutcheon plate, thereby locking the outer knob against rotation by reason of the locking leg also lying in the slot ttf.
When the bolt actuator E is lifted by either the edges or the spindle 22 or the semi-cylin drical portion it@ of the spindle it, the cam i3@ is released from its retained position by the lug ith. rihis happens because the spring 2li continually edges the detent longitudinally to Ward the inner knob and when the bolt actuator is removed, the rounded face of the cam ite readily slides over the lug ith to its initial position wherein the locking leg les is removed from the locking slot itc. Thereafter the bolt actuator can be ireely operated by the outer knob B as well as the inner knob C. It will be apparent that the spindle it is rotated by manipulation of the cylinder lock it by the key K and that the spindle 22 is manipulated by the knob C. The bolt operating portion 55d of the spindle i5 can be operated only when the lock is unlocked.

A privacy lock structure comprising a spini5 die housing, a latch housing attached thereto, a latch actuating member spring pressed to a position extending from the latch housing into the spindle housing, inner and outer knobs rotatably journalled in said spindle housing each having 50 a spindle section in engagement with the actuating member, said outer knob and said spindle housing having lock elements normally in coinciding relationship, means for locking said outer knob to the spindle housing comprising a 55 member having a retainer thereon, a central aperture in the inner knob adapted to receive the spindle member, a longitudinally and laterally movable detent lying adjacent the spindle mein-- ber, a push button in the inner knob in contact 50 with one end of the detent and a spring at the other end of the detent normally urging the push button toward the inner knob, a laterally directed cam face on the detent adapted to be normally urged laterally by said latch actuating member to a position adapted to engage the retainer in a privacy locked position when the push button is depressed, said detent having a portion thereof in engagement with said lock elements in 70 privacy locked position wherein the outer knob is locked against rotation, said spindle section on the inner knob being adapted upon rotation of the inner knob to shift said latch actuating member outwardly to a position released from engagement with the detent wherein the detent is spring pressed to a position releasing said lock elements.

A privacy lock structure comprising a spin dle housing, a latch housing attached thereto, a latch actuating member spring pressed to a position extending from the latch housing into the spindle housing, inner and outer knobs rotatably journalled in said spindle housing each having a spindle section in engagement with the actuating member, said outer knob and said spindle housing having lock elements normally in coinciding relationship, means for locking said outer knob to the spindle housing comprising a spindle member having a retainer thereon, a central aperture in the inner knob adapted to receive the spindle member, a longitudinally movable detent lying adjacent the spindle member, a push button in the inner knob in contact with one end of the detent and a spring at the other end oi the detent normally urging the push button toward the inner knob, a laterally directed rounded cam face on the detent adapted to be normally urged laterally by said latch actuating member to a position adapted to engage the retainer in a privacy locked position on the outer side thereof when the push button is depressed, said detent having a portion thereof in engagement with said lock elements in privacy locked position wherein the outer knob is locked against rotation, said spindle section on the inner knob being adapted upon rotation of said inner knob to shift said latch actuating member to a position released from engagement with the detent wherein the detent is spring pressed to position released from the locking elements, and a lock in the outer knob non-rotatably connected to the spindle member adapted upon rotation to rotate the retainer from retaining engagement with said cam face.
5. A privacy lock structure comprising a spindle housing, a latch housing attached thereto, a latch actuating member spring pressed to a position extending from the latch housing into the spindle housing, inner and outer knobs rotatably journalled in said spindle housing each having a spindle section in engagement with the actuating member, said outer knob and said spindle housing having recesses normally in coinciding relationship, means for locking said outer knob to the spindle housing comprising a semi-cylindrical spindle having a retainer thereon and rotatable relative to the inner knob, the inner knob having a central aperture adapted to receive the semi-cylindrical spindle, a longitudinally movable detent lying Within the spindle, a push button in the inner knob in centered relation to one end of the detent and a spring in the outer knob and at the other end of the detent normally urging the push button toward the inner knob, a laterally directed cam on the detent adapted to be normally urged laterally by said latch actuating member to a position adapted to engage the retainer in a privacy locked position on the outer side thereof when the push button is depressed, said detent having a portion there of positioned in said recesses in privacy locked position wherein the outer knob is locked against rotation, said spindle section on the inner knob adapted upon rotation to shift said latch actuating member to a position released from engagement with the detent wherein the detent is spring pressed to position released from locked recesses, a cylinder lock in the outer knob and a non-rotatable connection between the cylinder lock and the semi-cylindrical spindle, said semi-cylindrical spindle upon rotation thereof being adapted to remove the retainer from retaining engagement with said cam.
