12 Claims. ca. 70-146) The present invention relates to a door lock and more particularly to a novel door lock assembly having an inner and an outer knob for retracting a latch bolt to permit opening of the door, the inner knob being provided with a turn button adapted to lock the outer knob against turning movement and retraction of the latch bolt.
Among the objects of the present invention is the provision of a novel door lock in which the inner knob is provided with a novel turn button assembly for locking the outer knob against turning movement, and a novel cam and tube assembly upon which the outer and inner knobs are mounted in such manner that the inner knob may be rotated and the door opened from the interior when the turn button is in locked or unlocked position, but the outer knob is capable of turning to retract the latch bolt only when the inner knob is unlocked. In the disclosed embodiment, the locking of the outer knob from the interior by turning the turn button of the inner knob maintains the outer knob against turning movement until the turn button is released, thereby preventing access from the exterior to the interior of a room or other enclosure except by means of the requisite key for turning the lock tumbler in the outer knob to unlock the door.
Another important feature of the present invention is the provision in a door lock of a novel cam and tube assembly upon which the outer and inner knobs are mounted and housing the locking mechanism for controlling turning of the outer knob.
A further object of the present invention is the provision in a door lock of a novel cam tube, inner tube and sleeve assembly mounted in concentric relation and so constructed, arranged and connected that when the outer cam tube and its outer knob are locked against rotation, the sleeve carrying the inner knob and the inner tube connected thereto are permitted to rotate relative to the cam tube to thereby retract the latch bolt without turning or releasing the cam tube and its outer knob from locked position.
Another important object of the present invention is the provision in a door lock of a novel means and mechanism for retracting a latch bolt and including a novel cam tube, inner tube and sleeve assembly including a split cam tube upon which the outer knob is mounted and adapted to carry a key-actuated tumbler lock, a split sleeve adapted to carry an inner knob provided with a turn button, and an inner tube carried in the adjacent ends of the cam tube and sleeve all connected into an assembled unit in such manner that the sleeve and inner tube rotate together and the inner tube and cam tube are connected for limited rotation therebetween, whereby the outer knob and its cam tube may be locked against rotation while permitting the inner knob, sleeve and inner tube to rotate and withdraw the latch bolt.
The present invention further comprehends a novel housing assembly for a door lock in which the cam tube is journalled in the opposite end walls of the housing.
2,739,472 Patented Mar. 27, 1956 A further object of the present invention is the provision in a door lock assembly of a novel turn button assembly for locking the exterior or outer knob against turning movement.

Fig. 10 is a view in front elevation of the housing assembly and its disassembled outer and inner clamping plates shown in Fig. 9.
Referring to the disclosure in the drawings and more particularly to the novel illustrative embodiment therein shown, the disclosed embodiment of a lock assembly is adapted for use with a door or closure having an outer knob adapted to be locked or unlocked from the interior of a room or other enclosure by the rotation of a turn button. When the turn button on the inner knob is manually turned or moved to unlocked position, the door may be freely opened from the interior as Well as from the exterior by a mere turning of either knob which in turn retracts the latch bolt.
Upon manual turning of the button to locking position the outer knob is locked against turning movement but the inner knob may be turned to retract the latch bolt and permit opening of the door from the interior. How ever, such turning of the inner knob without turning of the turn button does not release the outer knob for turning and does not release the turn button from its locked position so that upon again closing the door the door is locked to the exterior. In the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 to 7, inclusive, the door may be unlocked from the exterior by a key inserted into the cylinder of a tumbler or look mounted within the outer knob, so that upon turning of the key the latch. bolt is retracted.
In the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 to 7, inclusive, the novel lock construction includesran outergknob .10 mounted .atzthe exterior of a door orrclosure llupon the outer end of a split cam Ltube 12,-.and;an :inner =k110b13. mounted at the interior of a door or closure upon a split sleeve 14. These knobs and 13 are securelytbut-detachably mounted on the opposite ends of a cam and tube assembly shown ingreater detail in Figs. 7 and '8, and which ineludes the splitcam 12, .an inner tube and the sleeve 14 all connected together insuch'rnanuer, that the inner tube 15 and its external sleeve 14 which encompasses and conformably receives the inner. end -or"--.the inner lllbfi 15 are securely or fixedly connected together, but .the split cam tube 12 which encompasses and conformably receives .the-outerend of the inner tube 15 is capable of turning upon the outer-end of the inner tube through a limited arc of travel, but afiixed thereto against longitudinal movement.
To connect the cam tube 12 to the inner tube 15 for limited rotation therebetween, the cam tube is provided at 16 with two narrow transverse slots adjacent the inner end of this cam tube whereby to provide a relatively nar row connecting strip 17 adapted to lac-depressed or indented into an arcuate, slot 18 in an intermediate portion of the inner tube 15, thereby staking theparts together but permitting limited rotation therebetween.
The cam tube 12 is longitudinally split or slotted at 19 with this slot extending for a substantial portion of the length of the tube and adapted to receive a detent 210m the knob 10 fitting conformably within the slot 19 and thereby aligning the knob 10 upon the cam .tube 12 and permitting its ready assembly by sliding the knob longitudinally onto the cam tube (Fig. 3). To detachably connect .the outer knob 10 in anchored position, the cam tube 12 at a point diametrically opposite the longitudinal slot 19 is provided with a recess or opening 22 adapted to.receive a button 23 (Figs. 3, 7tand '8) staked or affixed to an arcuate expansible or snap spring 24 carried within and .upon the inner cylindrical wall of the cam tube and forcing this button 23 outwardly through the recess or opening 22. To receive the projecting end of this button, the neck of the outer knob .10 is provided with a recess or opening 25 which when aligned with the button '23, the latter snaps into locking engagement in the recess andretains the outer knob 10 assembled on the cam tube .12. The cam tube is further provided with diametrically opposed longitudinally extending slots .26 open attheir outer end for slidably receiving a key lock assembly 27 in the outer knob 10(Figs. 3 and 6).
The inner knob 13 is adapted to be mounted upon and detachably anchored to the split sleeve member 14 by means of a detent 28 adapted to vbe conformably received in a longitudinally extending slot .29 in the sleeve member (Figs. 1, 2 and 3) and aspring pressed knob holder 31, the projecting end of which extends through a transverse slot 32 in the sleeve 14. A leaf spring '33 has one end 34 anchored in a slot in the holder and the other end 35 bent and received and anchored in a transverse slot 36 spaced from the transverse slot 32, whereby the projecting end'of the'knob holder -31-is'spring-biased to elevated or extended position. This leaf spring 33 islocated in a longitudinally extending slot 37 and flattened end portion 38 of the inner end-of the inner tube '15 (Figs, 7 and .8). The projecting end of the knob :holder .31is adaptedto beyreceived in an elongated, transverse. slot 39 in the neck of the knob whereby the inner knob 13 is detachably locked, to 'the'sleeve 14.
The sleeve 14 is attached ,or rigidly anchored ,to the inner concentric tube 15.by means .ofapair of oppositely disposed tongues41 (Figs. 2, 7and 8), each of which is bentor staked intoan aligned'longitu'dinally extending slot 42 at .the opposite end of a circumferentially extending groove '43 in the inner tube'15'.
' The 'outer end of the'inner tube 15 is provided with ably receiving the projecting end 45 of the key lock assembly 27, and the tube receives therein in sequence a guide ring 46 disposed adjacent the flanges 44, a guide coil spring 47, a guide washer 48 having a peripheral portion thereof cut away .at 49, ,and a locking lever or slide bar 50. This locking lever or slide bar is provided at its outer end with a laterally projecting leg 51 having spaced projections 52 and 53, the projection 52 extendinginto and centered in an opening 54 inthe guide'was'her 48 and the leg 51 being adapted to be moved'into locking engagement with a slot in an end plate or end wall 55 of a stationary housing 56 (Figs. 2, 4, 5 and 6)..
Adjacent the laterally projecting leg 51, the locking lever or slide bar 50 is notched at '57 (Fig. 8) and its inncr end 553 reduced and projecting into a turn button assembly 59. This latter assembly includes a bushing 61 having a transverse plate 62, diametrically spaced, longitudinally extending arms connecting the plate 62 .toa pair of arcuate portions v63 fitting conformably-within the hollow interior of a turn button .54 (Fig. 3). Also mounted within the turn button is a washer having ,an annular peripheral flange 65 conformably fitting within the turn button and a cupped or annular reduction 66, with the bushing 61 and washer secured or staked within the turn button 64 by spaced indents .67 to completeqthe turn button assembly (Fig. 8).
The guide spring 47 spring-biases the locking lever or slide bar 50 toward the inner knob end of the assembly (Fig. 3) and tends to move this locking slide :bar 50 out of its locking position in the end plate or. wall 55 ,of the stationary housing 56. In assembled position, the elongated reduced end 53 of the locking lever or slide bar-50 projects through an opening 68 in the transverseplate 62, through analigned opening in the cupped or annularreduction 66 of the Washer and into thehollow of the ,turn button 64.
The transverse plate 62 carried by the turn button 64 has opposed projectiohs 69 one of which is provided with a tongue 71 (Fig. 3) projecting into a camming slot 72 having a lip 73 adjacent its narrow end 74 providing a recess for the reception and retention of the tongue 71 when'the turn button 64 is rotated and forced inwardly to move the locking lever or slide bar 50 to locking position,.and its other or wide end 75 provided with a recess to receive the tongue 71 when the turn button -,is moved through an arc of approximately to unlockedposition. The inner knob 13 is provided with ,a central opening having an inturned flange 76 defining this opening and providing abearing for rotating and sliding movement of the turn button 64. The outer knob '10 is provided with a similar opening defined by an inturned, cylindrical flange 76 for rotatably mounting the ,plug 77 of the key lock assembly .27.
The split cam 12 is cut away or notched (Fig. 8),; adjacent its inner end at 78 to provide longitudinally-extending and spaced camming edges 79 and \cutawayor notched at 80. The inner tube 15 is also longitudinally notched or cutaway at .dladapted to be aligned With the notch 73 when the split cam 12 and the .innertube v15 are assembled and secured in assembled relation, and provided with longitudinally eXtendingand spaced camming edges 82.
The cam and tube assembly .is journalled or rotatably mounted in the stationary housing 56 (Figs. l, 2 ,.3, 4, 5 and 7) comprising asubstantially cylindrical wa1l;83;c.ut away or notched to provide-an opening .34 defined-by a pair of-inturnedand opposed flanges 285 each :provided at its outer endzwith aprojccting lipt86. .Thecylind-rical wall 83 is further provided with spaced and-substantially diametrically opposed inturned tongues or flanges '87 (Figs. 5 and 7) stamped and bent "or -forn1ed-inwardly With either providing a fulcrum about which a floating push plate'or follower 8? is adapted to-pivot'or rock This-push *plate or follower '83 seats orbears againstthe end of a pusher or slide member 89 for retracting the latch bolt 91.
The push plate or follower 88 is of substantially greater width at its end 92 and thereat provided with inturned flanges 93. At its other or narrower end it is also provided with similar flanges 94 each bent inwardly to form enclosures as will be clearly apparent from Fig. 5, with the enclosures formed by the flanges 93 adapted to receive the ends 95 of a coil spring 96 suitably anchored in the housing 56. The ends 95 of the coil spring 96 spring-bias the push plate or follower 88 to its neutral position as shown in Fig. 5, with rocking of this floating push plate or follower being effected about either inturned tongue or flange 87, providing a fulcrum on the interior of the housing 56.
The camming edges 79 of the split cam 12 and the camming edges 82 of the inner tube 15 are adapted to engage the flanged, inner side of push plate or follower plate 80 and rock or rotate the latter which rocking movement depresses the pusher or slide member 89 and retracts the latch bolt 91.
When the turn button is unlocked with the tongue 71 in the recess in the widened end 75 of the camming slot 72, either the inside knob 13 or the outside knob may be freely turned. When the unlocked inside knob is turned in either direction, the split sleeve 14 and the connected inner tube 15 are turned and the rotating camming edges 82 on the inner tube engage and rotate the push plate or follower 88 to depress the slide member or pusher 89 and retract the latch bolt 91. When the turn button 64 is in unlocked position, the outer knob 10 is also unlocked and may be turned in either direction to rotate the connected cam tube 12 and cause either camming edge 79 of the camming tube to engage the push plate or follower plate 88 and depress the pusher or slide member 89 for retracting the latch bolt 91.
When the turn button 64 is moved to locked position in which the locking lever or slide bar is moved to the left or outwardly as shown in Fig. 3, the projection 53 on the leg 51 of this locking lever or slide bar seating within a slot 97 in the end wall 55 of the stationary housing 56 and the laterally projecting leg 51 enters the inner end of the slot 19 in the cam tube 12 so as to lock the cam tube 12 and the outer knob 10 against rotation. However, in such locked position of the turn button 64 the inner knob may be freely rotated to open the door 11 from the interior, the knob in turn rotating the inner tube 15 and rocking the follower plate or push plate 88 to depress the slide member 89 and retract the latch bolt 91. But such turning movement of the inner knob 13 does not release the locking lever or slide bar 50 from its locked position in the fixed end plate 55 on thestationary housing 56 so that the outer knob 10 and its cam tube 12 cannot be rotated. In order to then release the latch bolt 91 from the exterior of the door 11 it is necessary to insert the proper key 98 in the plug 77 of the key lock assembly 27 whereby turning of the key will rotate the inner tube 15 and rock the follower plate or push plate 88 to retract the latch bolt 91.
The key lock assembly 27 includes the plug 77 fitting conformably in the opening defined by the inturned flange 76 in the outer knob 10, and carrying plural tumblers 101 in radial recesses, a cylinder 102 carrying aligned drivers 103 for the tumblers and each driver spring-pressed by a coil spring 104 seating at its upper or outer end against a retainer 105. A plug ring 106 carrying the lug or projecting end 45 extends into the inner tube 15 and thereat engages the inturned flanges 44 on the outer end of the inner tube 15 whereby when the proper key 98 is inserted into the key lock assembly the key may be rotated and it in turn rotates the plug 77 and the plug ring 106 whereby the inner tube 15 is rotated to cause one of its camming edges 82 to rock the follower plate or push plate 88 and retract the latch bolt 91.
Rotation of the inner tube 15 with the locking lever or slide bar 50 in its extended, locked position in the inner end of the slot 19 in the cam tube 12 adjacent the notched portion is permitted by reason of the slot 81 in the inner tube 15 and the connection between the cam tube 12 and inner tube 15, whereby the inner tube may rotate through an arc suflicient to allow its camming edges 82 to abut and rock the follower or push plate 88 to depress the slide member or pusher 89 and retract the latch bolt 91. At the same time the cam tube 12 is prevented from being rotated by the location of the leg 51 of the locking lever or slide bar 50 in the slot 19 and also in the slot 97 in the end wall 55 of the stationary housing 56.
The end wall or plate 55 of the housing 56 is provided with a hub 107 providing a bearing for rotatably receiving the cam tube 12, and is externally threaded for detachably receiving the internally threaded hub of a clamping plate 108. This clamping plate 108 is adapted to be adjusted and bear against the exterior of the door 11 as shown in Fig. 3, and is enclosed by an escutcheon 109 which covers this external clamping plate and is preferably aflixed thereto by indentations 111 on its peripheral flange 112 interlocking with grooved portions on the peripheral edge 113 of the clamping plate 108.
The end wall 55 is rigidly fixed or secured to the outer edge of the cylindrical portion 83 of the stationary housing 56 by providing this outer edge with crimped or undulated flanges or tongues 114 projecting outwardly from the cylindrical wall 83 of the housing 56 over the end wall 55. An inner end wall or plate 115 is secured to the opposite end of the stationary housing 56 by crimped or undulated flanges or tongues 116 projecting from the cylindrical wall 83 and crimped over the end wall 115 of the housing 56. This end wall 115 is provided with an outwardly projecting hub 117 providing a bearing for the cam tube 12, and is provided with a pair of spaced projecting machine screws 118 adapted to receive a removable inner clamping plate 119. These screws are adapted to project through aligned keyhole slots in the inner clamping plate whereby when this inner clamping plate 119 is mounted over the head of the screws 11S and .is rotated so that the heads of these screws are disposed in the narrow ends of the keyhole slots and the screws tightened, the inner clamping plate bears against the inside of the door 11 and the lock assembly is held in fixed position.
An escutcheon 121 is mounted over the inner clamping plate 119 and detachably held in assembled relation by spaced snaps or detents 111 detachably interlocking with the peripheral flange or edge 122 of the inner clamping plate 119. After the escutcheon has been assembled,
the inner knob 13 is then assembled and locked in position by the knob holder 31.
For locating the end plates or walls 55 and 115 of the housing 56 in their proper location and spaced relation, the cam tube 12 is shown in Figs. 3, 5 and 8 as provided with a pair of projections 123 providing spaced stops or abutments.
When the cam tube 12, inner tube 15, sleeve 14 and the component parts of the locking mechanism shown in Fig. 8 are assembled, the inner tube 15 is inserted into the cam tube 12 with the outer end of the inner tube containing the inturned flanges 44 being positioned adjacent the annular spring 24 (Fig. 7) and the strip 17 adjacent the inner end of the cam tube 12 is indented into the arcuate, transverse slot 18 of the inner tube 15 whereby to lock these concentric members together with the slot 18 being of suflicient length to permit limited rotation therebetween whereby the caming edges 82 of the inner tube 15 actuate the follower or push plate 88 to retract the latch bolt 91 upon turning of the inner knob 13 and its sleeve 14. Then the guide ring 46, the guide coil spring 47, the guide washer 48 and the locking lever or sliding locking bar 50 are inserted into the inner sleeve 15, with the projection 52. of the locking bar 50 received in the opening 54 of the guidewasher 48 and the -ends of the cut-away peripheral portion 49- of thisguidewasher seating upon the cammingedges 82 of the inner tube and rotatable therewith. The split sleeve 14 is secured to the inner'end of'the'inner tube 15 by depressing the tongues-41 into thelongitridinal slots'42 at the ends of the circumferentialgroove43 of theinner sleeve, the knob holder 31 and spring 33 are assembled in operative position'and'the turn button assembly 59 is mounted in the inner end of the split sleeve 14 with the tongue 71 on the transverse plate 62 of the turn button assembly projecting into-the camming slot 72.
The housing 56 with its-end plates and is assembled on the cam tube and 'sleeve' assemblyin the manner shown in Fig. 7. Next the outer clamping plate 108, escutcheon 109, key lock-assembly 27 and outer knob 10 are assembled to form the unit assembly shown in Fig. 2 for insertion through a transverse bore 124 in the door 11.
The latch bolt assembly or unit designated generally by the reference numeral 125 and also shown disassembled in Fig. 2, includes the slide or pusher 89, the latch-bolt 91 and its actuating mechanism in the latch bolt housing 126 and its face plate 127 fixed to the housing, is adapted to be inserted in a bore in the edge of the door 11 and secured to the doorin the manner shown in-Fig. 3.
In the assembly ofthese pro-assembled units, the housing 56 and its assembly: is inserted into the transverse bore 124 in the door 11 to a position in which the pusher or" slide member 89on'the inner end of the latch bolt unit or assembly 125 may enter the opening 84' in the housing 56, and when. the oppositely opening channels 128 on the inner'end'of the latch bolt housing 126 are aligned with the flanges 85 on the housing 56, moving the housing assembly untilthe outer clamping plate 108 abuts the door. 11 causing the oppositely projecting tongues or lips, 86 on the housing 56 to enter the channels 128 and thepre-assem'bled units are held in their proper assembled. relation as shown in Fig. l. The face plate 127 is then secured to the edge of'the door 11 by screws or other attaching means and the inner clamping'plate 119, its escutcheon 121 and the inner. knob13 are applied in sequence and assembled in their proper operative relation.
Figs. 9 and 10 disclose an alternate embodiment of the present invention in which the outer knob, 129' is not provided with an openinglto, receive a key lock assembly and this knob-is. staked at 131 to the cam. tube 12; In
this vembodiment, the housing 132 comprises a cylindrical part 133 and an end wall or plate'134-secured thereto by spaced longitudinally evteriding flanges 135 and 136 projecting through aligned slots in the end plate, with the projecting ends of flanges1135 and136 deformed to lock the'endwall to the housing; "This end wall is provided with n hub 137 encompassing the cam tube 12 andheld in alignment by'means of projections 138 upstanding from the cam tube.
The inner end of thecylindrical. part 133 of the housing 132 is provided with oppositely disposed inturned,
flanges .139, each tapped to receive a machine screw 141 for receiving a clamp plate 142v provided with arecess orslot to permit the plate to slip over the knob holder-31. This inner clamp plate 'is provided with oppositely disposed'bayonetslotseach adapted to receive the headof a SCI'CW141, andiwhen rotated to dispose the shank of the. screw in the narrow end of the bayonet slot with, the'locating lugs "MU-located in the transverse opening 12 in thedoorll and the screws tightened, attaches the clamp plate 142" upon the housing'and looks it against the adjacent face-of the-door. Wall or clamp plate 134, this clamp plate142 is provided with a hub 143 in which the inner end ofthe cam tube 12 is-journalled.
Unlike the-embodimentsshownin Figs. 1 to '8, in-
Like the end I elusive, 'theouterend wall or plate 134 bears against" the outer face of the door 11 and is adapted to'receive an escutcheon' 144; Any adjustment relative to the thickness of the door is accomplished by adjusting the. inner clamp plate 142 which functions as a combined end wall and clamping plate for the housing and on which the inner escutcheon 144 is mounted.
In other respects the component parts of this alternate assembly'are similar to that of the embodiment of- Figs. 1 m8, inclusive, and like reference characters have been applied to similar parts.
1111 this latter form of the invention, the housingassembly is of simplified construction and of decreased cost,'and although it does not permit the range of adjustment contemplated by the housing embodied in the lock of'Figs. l to 8, inclusive, it has the advantage that in prefabricated homes and in ready-hung doors, the latch bolt assembly maybe initially mounted in the door for shipment and at the place of final installation the housing and its cam tube assembly may be readily insertedto complete the lock assembly.
