Cylinder locks of any design may be attacked by the picking of the tumblers through the key hole. Another method involves the use of force, such as the insertion of a tool in the keyway and the forcible application of torque to that tool tending to rotate the plug to shear the usual type of tumblers. It is the object of my invention to devise a cylinder lock of the type in which the application of force to the key plug, while suficient to shear any resisting tumblers, will not be effective to unlock the mechanism controlled by the cylinder.
More particularly, it is the object of my invention to devise a cylinder lock in which the tum blers of the lock must be set to permit free rotation of the plug relatively to the cylinder in order that the cam mechanism operable by the plug may be effectively actuated, and where, if the plug is forcefully rotated, the cylinder securing means will give way to permit the plug and cylinder to rotate freely together.
It is a further object of the invention to devise a cylinder lock in which the cam mechanism lies normally in a dead center position on the cylinder axis so that any forcible rotation of the cylinder 1 that may be caused by the application of torque to the plug thereof, will tend to rotate the cam mechanism in a dead center position, whereby it has no effective movement. 1
A still further object of the invention is to de- 7 vise a cylinder lock having a cam which lies normally out of the plane of the means which it is adapted to operate, it being movable into an effective operating plane by rotation of the key plug relatively to the cylinder.
It is also an object of my invention to. devise a locking cylinder which is readily insertable and removable from alock mechanism, and whose removal is controlled by the rotation of the key plug in the usual manner by a predetermined key.
For a more detailed description of my invention, I shall refer to the drawings wherein Fig. l

Referring now-to Figs. 9, 10, and 12, which show further partsof the invention, it is seen that the plug 19 has mounted therein as'eries of tumblers 13 of the usual spring-pressed sliding tumbler type, which normally lock the plug to the sleeve ll except when the tumblers are placed in a release positionby a key as is readilyunderstood by those skilled in the art.
The plug Ill has securedthereto. an integral pin l 4 which rides in a groove 95 in theplug sleeve l I so as to limit the possible movement of the. plug 19 relatively to the sleeve l l and to retain itwithin the sleeve. Thesleeve l l is maintained against any rotary movement within the housing I Z by cooperation of the pin 24 of the housing with the slot 25-in the sleeve. For preventing the outward movement of the cylinder sleeve. l I. from the housing I2 I prefer to utilize a spring member 2li shown best in Figs. 11, and 11A, which .is adapted to lie in aligned grooves 28 and 21 of the cylinder sleeve H and the housing I2 respectively. The manner in which this retaining spring; Zfiis controlled will be indicated later. It will be wellalsoto indicate that the pin Zlofth'e cam. I8, mas locked position such as is illustrated in new and 9, is adapted to lie in a deadcenter position relatively different forms as dictated by the particular type to the locking mechanism, which in this particular case happens to be the bolt 22. The object of this construction will also be indicated presently.
In the normal operation of the locking plug ID, a key is inserted into its keyway to operate the tumblers I3 and align them with the periphery of the plug. Rotation of the plug is then possible, and this rotation will cause the integral lug I6 of the plug to move the sliding cam member I8 on its bearings l9 and 20 so as to cause the pin 2| to retract the bolt 22, or to act similarly on any other type of locking mechanism which may be required.
The manner in which my lock will withstand attack will now be described. A tool or other mechanism may be inserted by force into the keyway of the plug IIl so that rotary force may be applied to the plug in the direction of the arrow 30 shown in Fig. 10, which torque will tend naturally to shear the tumblers I3. This torque will be transmitted through the tumblers I3 to the sleeve II and will be resisted by the pin 24 cooperating with the slot 25 of the cylinder sleeve. This pin 24 is sodesigned that it is relatively weak as compared to the combined strength of the several tumblers I3. Therefore, this torque tending to shear the tumblers I3 will really shear the pin 24, and will naturally cause the free rotation of the plug ID with the sleeve II. This free rotation of these parts, combined with the dead center relation of the pin 2| of cam I8, will simply cause the entire cam, sleeve and plug assembly to rotate as a unit, ineffective in every respect to actuate the locking mechanism represented diagrammatically by the bolt 22.
Also, due to the fact that the plug ID has a relatively large head which prevents any access to the sleeve II, it is readily seen that any attempt to maintain the sleeve I I in a fixed position while the plug I0 is rotated relatively tothe sleeve II, will be successfully resisted.
My entire plug and sleeve assembly is readily insertable in and out of the housing I2, thus making it possible to change the particular cylinder which may have been placed in said locking mechanism, whenever such change becomes desirable. The sleeve and plug are inserted into housing I2 with the slot 25 cooperating with the pin 24 to prevent later rotation of the sleeve relatively to the housing. Also, the spring member 26, upon reaching a point opposite the slot 21 of the housing I2, will spring into that slot to prevent endwise movement of the cylinder mechanism from the housing.
' Preferably also, means are arranged to permit easy removal of the cylinder from the housing. The plug III, as shown in Figs. 11 and 11A, has a notched portion 3| formed therein which cooperates with a hook end 32 of the spring 26' when the plug is rotated into the position of Fig. 11A. In that position, the downward depression of the spring 32 into the notched portion 3| is possible, as by a tool 33 inserted through the hole 34 of the housing member. It is quite obvious that rotation of the plug from the position of Fig. 11A
will serve to wind up the spring member 26 so as to draw it entirely within the groove 28 of the cylinder sleeve I I, whereupon outward movement of the sleeve from the housing will be quite simple.
For the description of a further modification of my invention, I will now refer to Figs. 1 to 7 inclusive. In this modification, the relation of the plug III to the sleeve II, and the method of rotation of the plug I 0 relatively to the sleeve I I is identical with that of the modification shown in Fig. 8. However, in the modification of Fig. l, I utilize a slide detent 35 operating in a groove 35 as shown in Fig. '7, to retain the plug in the sleeve I2, in place of the pin I4 and slot I5 connection shown in Fig. 8. In the main, however, my invention illustrated in Fig. l varies from the modification of Fig. 8 in that I utilize a cam mechanism which does not occupy a dead center relation to the sleeve II, but which in locked position occupies a position out of the plane of the locking mechanism which it is intended to operate. More particularly, the plug operated mechanism shown in Fig. 1 comprises the switch block 36 which merely represents diagrammatically a locking mechanism which may be of any usual type. I shall now proceed to describe more in detail the cam operation of Fig. 1.
As is best shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the plug body It has an extension 31 having a cam groove 38 adapted to cooperate with the pin 39 of a lock operating cam member 40 in a manner which will be described presently. The plug ID has a further extension II which cooperates further with the cam member 40 to support it in bearing relation to the plug. The cam member 43 has further bearing relation to the sleeve member II, and is normally spring-pressed by the spring member 42 (Fig. l) in a counter clockwise direction as viewed in Figs. 5 and. 6. Also, the pin 39, one end of which has been indicated as resting in the cam slot 38 of the plug extension 31, has an upper end riding in a slot 43 of the sleeve member II as is best illustrated in Figs. 2, 2A, and 2B.
As will be readily understood, the spiral cam slot 38 tends, through the bottom portion of pin 33, to transmit movement to the cam member 48 in opposition to the spring 42. This movement of the cam member 40 is controlled by the coaction between the upper end of pin 39 and the L shaped slot 43 of the sleeve member II. It will be well to indicate that in the position of Fig. 1, which is the locked position of the switch member 35, the controlling member 40 will be out of the plane of the slot 36a of the locking member 36 so that forceful rotation of the plug II], which in turn will cause a forceful rotation of the sleeve I I in the manner described with regard to modification of Fig. 8, will rotate the entire cylinder assembly relatively to the looking member 36 without affecting it in the slightest.
However, normal operation of the plug ID by the alignment of its tumblers I3, will permit rotation of the plug relatively to the sleeve II. This rotation will cause the cam groove 38 to cooperate with the bottom end of the pin 33 so as to cause a movement of the cam member 43 and its lugs 44 from the position of Fig. 2 to the position of Fig. 2A, and into the plane of the slot 330. of member 33. In the position of Fig. 2A, the pin 39 will have moved to the furthest end 380. of the slot 38. Further rotation of the plug IE! will cause the end 38a of the slot to actuate the pin 39, and this time the movement will be direct, causing the pin 39 to guide the locking cam from the position of Fig. 2A to the position of Fig. 2B. In this movement, the looking cam 43 and its lugs 44 will have moved to the position of Fig. 6 from the position of Fig. 5. Also, it will be quite obvious that the lugs 44 will have acted, through the slot 36a of the locking member 36, to rotate that member in anymanner 'which might have been desired. H

While I have thus described two modifications of my invention, it should be understood that I consider my contribution to the art to be very broad, and'that I do not wish to be limited in the monopoly which I may secure, except as maybe required by the state of the art.

In a look, a lock cylinder comprising a cylinder sleeve, a key plug in said sleeve, tumblers for locking said plug against rotation relatively to said sleeve except when said tumblers are properly positioned, a lock controlling cam mounted in said lock cylinder and normally lying out of its plane of effective controlling operation, means of connection between said plug and cam whereby rotation of said plug relatively to the sleeve will move said cam into its operating plane, and means for holding said sleeve in said lock adapted to release said sleeve readily when said plug is forcibly rotated without release of the tumblers, whereby said plug, sleeve and cam may rotate freely together without proper actuation of said cam into a lock controlling position.

In a look, a locking cylinder comprising a sleeve and plug and tumblers adapted to interlock said sleeve and plug except when properly positioned by a key, a lock controlling cam carried by said sleeve and actuable by said plug when key rotated relatively to said sleeve, said cam being mounted to lie out of its plane of controlling operation when in locked position so that free rotation of said sleeve and plug relatively to said lock will merely cause said cam to rotate idly without any lockoperating effect.

In a look, a locking cylinder comprising a sleeve and plug and tumblers adapted to interlock said sleeve and plug except when properly positioned by a key, a lock controlling cam carried by said sleeve and actuable by said plug when key rotated relatively to said sleeve, said cam being mounted to lie out of its plane of controlling operation when in locked position so that free rotation of said sleeve and plug relatively to said lock will merely cause said cam torotate idly without any lock operating effect, and means whereby rotation of said plug relatively to said sleeve first moves said cam into its plane of operation, and then rotates it to operate the lock.
16, In a lock, a locking cylinder comprising a sleeve and plug and tumblers adapted to interlock said sleeve and plug except when properly positioned by a key, a lock controlling cam carried by said sleeve and actuable for lock operation by said plug when key rotated relatively to said sleeve, said cam being mounted in dead center relationship to the lock mechanism when in locked position so that free rotation of said sleeve and plug together relatively to said lock will merely cause said cam to rotate idly without any lock operating efiect.

In a look, a locking cylinder comprising a sleeve and plug and tumblers adapted to interlock said sleeve and plug except when properly positioned by a key, a lock controlling cam actuable for lock operation by said plug when key rotated relatively to said sleeve, said cam being mounted in dead center relationship to the lock mechanism when in locked position so that free rotation of said sleeve and plug together relatively to said lock will merely cause said cam to rotate idly without any lock operating effect.

In a look, a readily removable and insertable cylinder assembly comprising a cylindrical sleeve and a plug having tumblers for interlocking the sleeve and plug except when said tumblers are key set, and a cam operable by rotation of said key plug in said sleeve when said key plug is properly released, means cooperating between said sleeve and lock to prevent rotation of said sleeve when it has been properly inserted, and additional readily releasable means for preventing outward movement of said cylinder assembly from said lock. 7

In a look, a readily removable and insertable cylinder assembly comprising a sleeve and plug having tumblers for interlocking the sleeve and plug except when said tumblers are key set, and a cam operable by rotation of said key plug in said cylinder assembly when said key plug is properly released, a pin and slot connection between said cylinder assembly and lock to prevent relative rotary movement, and a spring snap connection between said cylinder assembly and lock to prevent outward movement of said cylinder assembly. In a look, a lock cylinder assembly for said lock comprising a sleeve and plug having tumblers for interlocking the sleeve and plug except when said tumblers are key set, and a cam operable by rotation of said key plug in said sleeve when said keyplug is properly released, means cooperating between said sleeve and lock to prevent rotation of said sleeve in said lock, said rotation preventing means being weaker than saidv tumblers whereby forceful rotation of said plug'will -overcome said rotationpreventing means soaas to permit free'rotary movement of the sleeve insai-d lock;

In a lock, a readily removable and insertable lock cylinder assembly comprising a cylinder sleeve and plug having tumblers for interlocking the cylinder sleeve and plug except when said tumblers are key set, and a cam operable by rotation of'saidkey plug in said cylinder sleeve when said key plug is properly released, releasable means formaintaining said cylinder sleeve in said lock,-'said releasable'means being normally inoperable by said plug'but movable into operable relation therewith in a predetermined position of the plug whereby the rotationof the plug from that position will withdraw said means from its cylinder sleeve retainingposition.

In a look, a readily removable and insertable lock cylinder assembly for-said-lock comprising a cylinder sleeve and plug having tumblers for interlockingthe cylinder'sleeve and plug except when said tumblers are key set,-and a cam operable by rotation of said key' plug in said cylinder sleeve when said-key plug is properly released, said lock having a groove and spring retaining means carried by the cylinder sleeve andadapted to ride into said groove, means whereby said spring means may be operatively connected to the plug in a predetermined position of-the plug, whereby rotation of the plugfrom that position will withdraw the spring meansfrom retaining position. 24 In a lock, a readily removable and insertable lock cylinderassembly'for said-lock comprising a cylinder sleeve and plug having tumblers for interlocking the cylinder sleeve and plug except when said tumblers are key set, and a cam operable by rotation of said key plug in said cylinder sleeve when said key plug is properly released, said lock havinga groove and a spring carried by said cylinder sleeve and operating in said groove to retain the'cylinder sleeve in the lock, means of connection between the plug and spring whereby the spring can "be moved into connection with the-plugin a predetermined key rotated position of theplugfor movement by the plug into a releasing position,*sa-id spring being movable into cooperation with theplug through a hole in said lock.

In a look, a readily removable and insertable cylinder assembly comprising a sleeve and plug having tumblers for interlocking the sleeve and plug except when said tumblers are key set, a pin and slot connection between said cylinder assembly and lock to prevent relative'rotary movement and a spring snap connection between said cylinder assembly and lock to prevent outward movement of said cylinder assembly.

In a look, a lock cylinder assembly for said lock comprising a sleeve and plug'having tumblers for interlocking-the sleeve and'plug except when said tumblers are key set, means cooperating between said sleeve and lock to prevent rotation of said'sleeve in said lock, said rotation preventing means being weaker than said tumblers whereby forceful rotation of said plug will overcome said rotation preventing meansso as to permit free rotary movement of the sleeve in said lock;
32; In a look, a lock cylinder assembly for said lock comprising a cylinder'sleeve'and plug'having tumblersfor interlocking the cylinder sleeve and plug except when said tumblers are key set, a pin and slot connection between said cylinder sleeve and lock to prevent relative rotary movement, said pin and slot connection being weaker than said tumblers whereby forceful rotation of said plug will shear said pin and slot connection to permit full rotary movement of the cylinder sleeve in said lock.

In a look, a readily removable and insertable lock cylinder assembly comprising a cylinder sleeve and plug having tumblers for interlocking the cylinder sleeve and plug except when said tumblers are key set, releasable means for maintaining said cylinder sleeve in said lock, said releasable means being normally inoperable by said plug but movable into operable relation therewith in a predetermined position of the plug whereby the rotation of the plug from that position will withdraw said means from its cylinder sleeve retaining position.

In a look, a readily removable and insertable lock cylinder assembly for said lock comprising a cylinder sleeve and plug having tumblers for interlocking the cylinder sleeve and plug except when said tumblers are key set, said lock having a groove and spring retaining means carried by the cylinder sleeve and adapted to ride into said groove, means whereby said spring means may be operatively connected to the plug in a predetermined position of the plug, whereby rotation of the plug from that position will withdraw the spring means from retaining position.
35. In a look, a readily removable and insertable lock cylinder assembly for said lock comprising a cylinder sleeve and plug having tumblers for interlocking the cylinder sleeve and plug except when said tumblers are key set, said lock having a groove and a spring carried by said cylinder sleeve and operating in said groove to retain the cylinder sleeve in the lock, means of connection between the plug and spring whereby the spring can be moved into connection with the plug in a predetermined key rotated position of the plug for movement by the plug into a releasing position, said spring being movable into cooperation with the plug through a hole in said lock.
36. In a cylinder look, a sleeve, a key plug, tumblers adapted to lock said key plug to said sleeve, a lock operating cam carried by said sleeve and slidable relatively thereto, and a cam carried by said plug adapted to operate said sleeve cam as said plug rotates relatively to said sleeve, said sleeve cam being normally positioned in a concentric position relatively to the axis of the sleeve so that rotation of said sleeve and plug together will not move said sleeve cam in a lock operating direction.
37. In a cylinder lock, a sleeve, a key plug, tumblers adapted to lock said plug to said sleeve except when said tumblers are properly set, a lock operating cam mounted in said sleeve for outward movement and then for rotary movement, and a connection between said cam and said plug whereby rotation of said plug will first move said cam on its mounting in an outward direction and will then rotate it, said cam when in its inward position being out of a lock operating plane so that rotation of said sleeve and plug together will not move said cam in a lock operating direction.

In a cylinder lock, a sleeve, a rotating key plug in said sleeve, tumblers adapted to lock said key plug to said sleeve in a predetermined position, a cam mounted for sliding movement on said sleeve and having an operating portion, means between said key plug and cam for sliding said cam relatively to said sleeve, said cam being so positioned relatively to said sleeve when said plug is in its predetermined position that its operating portion is in dead center relation to the axis of said sleeve, whereby rotation of said sleeve and plug together will merely rotate the operating portion on the sleeve axis.- 7

In a lock, a sleeve, a rotating key plug in ating portion is in dead center relation to the axis of said sleeve, whereby rotation of said sleeve and plug together will merely rotate the operating portion on the sleeve axis,,means for maintaining said sleeve against rotation in said lock, said means being relatively weaker than said tumblers so that forceful rotation of said plug will overcome said means and will allow for free ro tation of the cam and plug.

In a cylinder look, a key plug, a cam, a guide for said cam, means between said guide and cam for guiding the cam for movement in a predetermined path having linear and rotary components with the linear component parallel to the axis of said plug, and means of connection between said plug and cam for moving said cam in said path.

In a cylinder look, a key plug, a cam member, a guide for said cam member, means of connection between said cam and said plug for actuating the cam upon rotation of the plug, and means whereby said guide acts to guide the cam for outward movement axially relatively to the plug and then for rotary movement when said cam is actuated by said plug.

In a cylinder lock, a key plug, a cam, a guide for said cam, and a pin and slot connection between said plug and cam-whereby said cam is moved by rotation of said plug, the said pin and slot connection being effective to move said cam linearly and in a rotating path depending upon the construction of said guide means.

In a cylinder look, a key plug, a cam, means of connection between said cam and plug comprising a pin and spiral groove, said cam being rotatable with said plug through said pin and groove when said cam is maintained against endwise movement, said cam being movable endwise relatively to said plug through said pin and groove connection when maintained against rotary movement.

In a cylinder lock, a key plug, a cam, means of connection between said cam and plug comprising a pin and spiral groove, said cam being rotatable with said plug through said pin and groove when said cam is maintained against endwise movement while released for rotary movement, said cam being movable endwise relatively to said plug through said pin and groove connection when maintained against rotary movement but released for endwise movement, and guide means for determining the movement of said cam in a rotary and in an endwise direction when actuated by said plug. In a cylinderlock, a key plug, a cam, a guide means, pin and slot connections between said cam and said guide means, on the one hand, and between said cam and said plug on the other hand, said connection between the plug and cam 75 being effective to move said cam by operation of the plug, said connection between the cam and guide means being efiective to guide the cam in its movement.

In a cylinder look, a key plug, a cam, a guide means, pin and slot connections between said cam and said guide means on the one hand, and between said cam and said plug on the other hand, said connection between the plug and cam being constructed in the nature of a pin and spiral groove whereby said cam is movable endwise by said connection or is rotatable with said plug by said connection, said connection between the cam and guide being efiective to guide the cam for predetermined endwise and rotary movement relatively to said plug.
